Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".
Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus

Tenho que ficar a sós
Tenho que apagar a luz
Tenho que calar a voz
Tenho que encontrar a paz
Tenho que folgar os nois
Dos sapatos, da gravata
Dos desejos, dos receios
Tenho que perder a conta
Tenho que ter mãos vazias
Ter a alma e o corpo nus...
Se eu quiser falar com Deus
Tenho que aceitar a dor
Tenho que comer o pão
Que o diabo amassou
Tenho que virar um cão
Tenho que lamber o chão
Dos palácios, dos castelos
Suntuosos do meu sonho
Tenho que me ver tristonho
Tenho que me achar medonho
E apesar de um mal tamanho
Alegrar meu coração...
E se eu quiser falar com Deus
Tenho que me aventurar
Eu tenho que subir aos céus
Sem cordas prá segurar
Tenho que dizer adeus
Dar as costas, caminhar
Decidido, pela estrada
Que ao findar vai dar em nada
Nada, nada, nada, nada
Nada, nada, nada, nada
Nada, nada, nada, nada
Do que eu pensava encontrar!
The lyrics to Maria Rita's "Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus" delve into the concept of communicating with God. She explains that in order to do so, one must be alone - both physically and mentally. This includes turning off the lights and silencing one's voice while finding peace and quiet. To fully connect with God, one must also let go of their material possessions, desires, and fears. In essence, accepting one's own vulnerability is necessary in order to have an open and honest conversation with the divine.
Maria Rita goes on to emphasize that speaking to God also requires accepting pain and struggles, and not just being content in moments of happiness. In fact, part of speaking to God may actually involve experiencing hardship and suffering. The process also involves detaching oneself from one's own ego and realizing that despite one's accomplishments, they are still just as human and flawed as everyone else. This leaves the final piece of advice to embrace the unknown and have faith in the journey, regardless of how it may end up.
Overall, "Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus" is a reminder to take a step back from the stressors of everyday life and focus on spiritual growth. It suggests that the act of speaking to God isn't just reserved for religious scholars, but is accessible for anyone willing to humble themselves and be vulnerable.
