Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

Vai dizer à vida
Que a ferida não cicatrizou
E eu ainda estou naquela
Que a saudade dela
Me deixou
Que a saudade dela
Me deixou
Vai meu samba, pelo amor de Deus
Diz que depois do adeus
É que eu fiquei assim
Vai meu samba, vai
Deixa o sol bater
Só pro mundo ver
O que restou de mim
Vai meu samba, vai
Deixa o sol bater
Só pro mundo ver
O que restou de mim
Vai meu samba
Vai dizer à vida
Que a ferida não cicatrizou
E eu ainda estou naquela
Que a saudade dela
Me deixou
Vai meu samba, pelo amor de Deus
Diz que depois do adeus
É que eu fiquei assim
Vai meu samba, vai
Deixa o sol bater
Só pro mundo ver
O que restou de mim
Vai meu samba, vai
Deixa o sol bater
Só pro mundo ver
O que restou de mim
Vai meu samba
The lyrics of Maria Rita's "Vai Meu Samba" convey a feeling of longing and heartache. The song begins by addressing the samba itself, asking it to tell the world that the pain of a love lost has not healed. The singer admits that they are still stuck in that same place where the longing for their former love has left them feeling empty.
The repetition of "E eu ainda estou naquela" ("And I am still stuck in that") serves to reinforce the sense of being trapped in a cycle of grief. The singer then implores the samba to tell the world that it was not until after the farewell that they were left feeling this way. The song's final lines bring the focus back to the present moment, with the samba representing a way to move forward and show the world the remnants of what's left behind.
Overall, the lyrics of "Vai Meu Samba" speak to the universal experience of heartbreak and the struggle to move on from a love lost. The use of the samba as a catalyst for catharsis and healing underscores the cultural significance of the genre in Brazil and beyond.
