Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

O teu sabor eu quero
Mas nem só beleza eu vi
Vi cidades degradadas
Pessoas desamparadas
Nas grades da solidão
Queima de arquivo nas praças
Chovia nas ruas do meu coração
O que se vê é vero
O teu sabor eu quero
Mas nem só beleza eu vi
Vi cidades turbulentas
Chacinas sanguinolentas
Pensei que morava nas terras do mal
Choro dos filhos, maldades
Fora dos trilhos, cidades
Pensei que sonhava e era tudo real
O que se vê é vero
O teu sabor eu quero
E a tua beleza eu vi
Vi uma estrela luzindo
A minha porta bateu
Querendo me namorar
Lua cheia clareava
Imaginei que sonhava e era tudo real
Ninguém mais coça bicho de pé
Nem ninguém caça mais arrastapé
Vida é assim é o que é
The lyrics for Maria Rita's song "Vero" express the singer's mixed emotions towards the world around them. The first stanza speaks of the singer's desire for the truth ("o que se vê é vero"), and wanting to taste the sweetness of life ("o teu sabor eu quero"). However, they also acknowledge that their experiences are not just beautiful, as they have seen degraded cities and abandoned people locked in the prisons of their own loneliness. The second stanza highlights even darker aspects of the world, such as fiery destruction in fields and forests, violent massacres in cities, and the cruelty inflicted upon innocent children. The singer's hope for a better world becomes confused with their reality, as they question if they are living in a place of evil.
Despite this, the final stanza of the song presents a glimmer of hope for the future. The singer sees a star shining and knocking on their door, wanting to love them, while the full moon illuminates their surroundings. They realize that even though what they have seen is real, it doesn't mean that beautiful things cannot exist, and life goes on.
Overall, "Vero" is a song about the complexities of life and the world around us. It acknowledges that there is both beauty and ugliness in the world, but ultimately, hope is what keeps us going.
