Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

Que agora não dá mais pé
Nem nunca mais vai dar
Também quem mandou se levantar
Quem levantou pra sair
Perde o lugar
Pra ajudar a marcar (o tamborim)
Logo eu com meu sorriso aberto
O paraíso perto, pra vida melhorar
Malandro desse tipo
Que balança mais não cai
De qualquer jeito vai
Ficar bem mais legal
Pra nivelar
A vida em alto astral
Logo eu com meu sorriso aberto
O paraíso perto, pra vida melhorar
Malandro desse tipo
Que balança mais não cai
De qualquer jeito vai
Ficar bem mais legal
Pra nivelar
A vida em alto astral
The song "Vou deitar e rolar" by Maria Rita is a samba song that is about taking control of one's life despite facing challenges, and not allowing oneself to be consoled by others. The lyrics tell the story of someone who has lost their place and is being replaced by someone new, but the singer is unfazed and declares that they are still the best. The chorus "quaquaraquaquá, quem riu, fui eu" translates to "caw caw caw, who laughed, it was me" - this is a playful reminder that the singer is unbothered by the situation and can even find humor in it.
The second verse of the song is directed at someone who has left and is now returning, but the singer tells them to stay in their own lane as they will not be welcomed back. The verse "todo mundo se admira da mancada que a Terezinha deu" is a reference to a common Brazilian saying that means "everyone is shocked by the mistake that Terezinha made", which is used to describe someone's downfall due to their own actions.
The final verse of the song is about the power of music and how it can lift one's spirits, even during difficult times. The singer mentions playing their guitar and various percussion instruments to help them overcome their own sadness and depression.
Overall, the song is a celebration of resilience and the ability to find joy and laughter in any situation.
