“Fourth Of July” was one of the first songs that I wrote for this album and it’s sort of like “Underneath The Stars”, which was my favorite song from the last album. We were continuing in the ‘70’s feel and lyrically I wanted to paint a picture, like when you listen to a song and you read the lyrics, It’s very visual in a lot of ways.
05 Fourth Of July

Starry eyed
As you put your hand in mine
It was twilight
On the Fourth of July
Sparkling colors were
Strewn across the sky
That we just barely touched
While roman candles
Went soaring above us and baby
Then you put your hand in mine
And we wandered away
I was trembling inside
But I wanted to stay
Pressed against you there and leave the world behind
On that Fourth of July
So starry eyed (so starry eyed)
On the flowery hillside
Breathless and fervid
Amid the dandelions
As it swept over me
Like the wind trough the trees
I felt you sigh with a
Sweet intensity and baby
Then you put your hand in mine (your hand in mine)
And we floated away
Delicately lay entwined
In an intimate daze
A crescent moon began to shine (began to shine)
And I wanted to stay (stay)
Tangled up with you among the fireflies
On that Fourth of July (Fourth of July)
Thunder clouds (thunder clouds)
Hung around (hung around)
So threateningly (so threateningly)
Ominously hovering
And the sky (the sky)
Opened wide (opened wide)
Showering (oh yeah yeah9
Then you put your hand in mine (put your hand in mine)
And we ran from the rain (in the pouring rain, baby)
Tentatively kissed goodnight (tentatively kissed goodnight)
And went our separate ways (ways)
And I've never truly felt the way that I
Felt the Fourth of July (Fourth of July, Fourth of July)
Truly I have never felt the same inside
Like that Fourth of July (Fourth of July, Fourth of July)
Truly I could never feel the same as I
Felt that Fourth of July (Fourth of July), oh baby
In Mariah Carey's song "Fourth of July," the lyrics detail a romantic encounter that takes place on the titular holiday. The first stanza outlines the setting from the singer's perspective: twilight on the Fourth of July with sparkling colors strewn across the sky as roman candles shoot above. Then, the singer's love interest puts their hand in theirs and they wander away trembling. They are able to leave the world behind and become swept up in the moment. The second stanza finds the couple lying on a flowery hillside amid dandelions. The action is more sensual here as the singer talks about becoming entwined with their love interest amid fireflies during a crescendo that ends with being kissed tentatively in the pouring rain. The song concludes on a thoughtful note with the singer realizing they have never felt the same way after that memorable Fourth of July.
On a symbolic level, the Fourth of July is a time for Americans to reflect on the importance of independence and freedom. For the singer in this song, it seems like a day where they experience liberation in the sense of being with someone they love with no worries about the world around them. The moments of physical contact with their partner act as a catalyst for a transformative experience that the singer will cherish as special - never to be revisited again.

You need to appreciate real music to understand this gem
@thechief5670
It’s rather poppy r and b music what else can you say I mean it’s alright. Get deep into some Frank Zappa now that’s some “musical exploration” fuck yeah
@sapphirelatina
u need to know faith evans music to understand how mariah carey ripped her "faith" album off to do "butterfly" and subsequent albums.
@sapphirelatina
@@thechief5670 mariah overhyped for swagga jackin faith evans, an actual r&b legend
@lourencovieira5424
@@sapphirelatina mariah was inspired by her lol. the difference is mariah's pen game and that's the most important thing of this album, not exactly the beat or vocals (altough they are top notch), and how personal the lyrics are in this album. Also Faith Evans took inspiration from Mariah as well, after all, Mariah debuted before. Nonetheless they are still legends on their own right. No need to bring down Mariah to uplift Faith Evans.

I make sure to listen to this every Fourth of July.
Possibly Mariah's most meticulously crafted song ever. Criminally underrated.

Underrated? Where were you in 97?
