Carey's self-titled debut album was released under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, who married her three years later. She gained further worldwide success with the albums Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995). Their singles include "Hero", "Without You", "Fantasy", "Always Be My Baby", and "One Sweet Day", which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (1990s) and was the longest running number one song of the decade. After separating from Mottola, Carey adopted a new urban image and incorporated more elements of hip hop with the album Butterfly (1997). She left Columbia in 2001 after eleven consecutive years of U.S. number-one singles and signed a $100 million record deal with Virgin Records.
Following Carey's highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown and the failure of the film Glitter (2001) and its soundtrack, Virgin bought out her contract and she signed with Island Records the following year. After a comparatively unsuccessful period, Carey returned to the top of the charts with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), which became the best-selling album in the US and the world's second best-selling album of 2005. Its second single, "We Belong Together", topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (2000s). She won the Breakthrough Actress Performance award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for her role in the 2009 film Precious. Carey's subsequent ventures included being an American Idol judge, starring in the docu-series Mariah's World, appearing in the films The Butler (2013), A Christmas Melody (2015), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017), performing at two Las Vegas concert residencies, and publishing her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey in 2020.
Carey is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 220 million records sold worldwide. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), a female songwriter (18), and a female producer (15). Carey is the highest-certified female artist in the United States and 10th overall, with 72 million certified album units. In 2008, she was named one of Time's annual 100 most influential artists and entertainers in the world. Billboard named her the "top-charting female solo artist", based on both album and song chart success in 2019. Carey has won 5 Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 15 Billboard Music Awards and eight Guinness World Records. An inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, she is credited for inspiring multiple generations of pop and R&B artists, and for merging hip hop with pop music through her crossover collaborations.

Just let you leave without a trace,
When I'm standing taking every breath,
With you, ooohhh,
You're the only one who really knew me,
At all.
How can you just walk away from me,
Cause we shared the laughter and the pain,
And even shared the tears,
You're the only one who really knew me at all.
So take a look at me now,
There's just an empty space,
There's nothing left here to remind me,
Just the memory of your face,
So take a look at me now,
There's just an empty space,
If you're coming back to me it's against the odds,
And that's what I've got to face.
I wish I could just make you turn around,
Turn around and see me cry,
There's so much I need to say to you,
So many reasons why,
You're the only one who really knew me at all.
So take a look at me now,
There's just an empty space,
There's nothing left here to remind me,
Just the memory of your face,
So take a look at me now,
So there's just an empty space,
But to wait for you is all I can do,
When that's what I've got to face.
Take a good look at me now,
Cause I'll be standing here,
(Mark: Standing here)
And you coming back to me is against the odds,
And that's the chance I've got to take.
Got to take
Got to take
Ooh
Take a look at me now
Take a look at me now.
The lyrics of "Against All Odds" by Mariah Carey featuring Westlife is an emotional ballad about heartbreak and loss. The song is about a broken relationship where the singer is struggling to comprehend how the other person could just walk away from them without any explanation. The song emphasizes the connection and understanding they shared, which makes it even harder for the singer to accept the end of their relationship. The singer is left with only the painful memories of their time together and an empty space that serves as a constant reminder of what they've lost. Despite everything, the singer is still holding on to hope that the other person will return, but acknowledges that it's against all odds.
The lyrics and the melody of "Against All Odds" blend seamlessly to create a melancholic and soulful sound that captures the pain of lost love. Mariah Carey's emotive voice and Westlife's harmonies add another layer of intensity to the song, making it a powerful duet. The song's message is relatable, and the haunting melody leaves a lasting impact on the listener.

How can I just let you walk away,
It's difficult for me to let you leave without telling you how I feel.
Just let you leave without a trace,
It's hard to watch you disappear from my life without leaving any sign of our relationship.
When I'm standing taking every breath,
I'm still here, trying to breathe and keep going while you're gone.
With you, ooohhh,
I miss you so much, it hurts.
You're the only one who really knew me,
Out of everyone, you knew me best.
At all.
You knew everything about me, my good and my bad.
How can you just walk away from me,
It's hard for me to understand how you could just leave me behind.
When all I can do is watch you leave,
I feel powerless, only able to watch you go.
Cause we shared the laughter and the pain,
We had good times and bad times together.
And even shared the tears,
We cried together.
So take a look at me now,
My life has changed since you left me.
There's just an empty space,
There's a hole in my heart where you used to be.
There's nothing left here to remind me,
Everything that reminded me of you is gone.
Just the memory of your face,
All I have is the memory of your face when you were with me.
If you're coming back to me it's against the odds,
The chances of you coming back to me are not good.
And that's what I've got to face.
I have to accept that you may not come back to me.
I wish I could just make you turn around,
I want you to notice me and see how much I miss you.
Turn around and see me cry,
I'm hurting without you and I want you to see it.
There's so much I need to say to you,
I have a lot to tell you and I need you to listen.
So many reasons why,
I have so many reasons for why I love and need you.
So there's just an empty space,
I'm still alone without you.
But to wait for you is all I can do,
All I can do is wait for you to come back to me.
When that's what I've got to face.
I have to accept that waiting for you is my reality now.
Take a good look at me now,
See how I've changed since you left.
Cause I'll be standing here,
I'll still be here, waiting for you to come back.
And you coming back to me is against the odds,
The chances of you returning to me are slim.
And that's the chance I've got to take.
But I'm willing to take that chance because I love you.
