Carey's self-titled debut album was released under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, who married her three years later. She gained further worldwide success with the albums Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995). Their singles include "Hero", "Without You", "Fantasy", "Always Be My Baby", and "One Sweet Day", which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (1990s) and was the longest running number one song of the decade. After separating from Mottola, Carey adopted a new urban image and incorporated more elements of hip hop with the album Butterfly (1997). She left Columbia in 2001 after eleven consecutive years of U.S. number-one singles and signed a $100 million record deal with Virgin Records.
Following Carey's highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown and the failure of the film Glitter (2001) and its soundtrack, Virgin bought out her contract and she signed with Island Records the following year. After a comparatively unsuccessful period, Carey returned to the top of the charts with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), which became the best-selling album in the US and the world's second best-selling album of 2005. Its second single, "We Belong Together", topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (2000s). She won the Breakthrough Actress Performance award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for her role in the 2009 film Precious. Carey's subsequent ventures included being an American Idol judge, starring in the docu-series Mariah's World, appearing in the films The Butler (2013), A Christmas Melody (2015), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017), performing at two Las Vegas concert residencies, and publishing her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey in 2020.
Carey is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 220 million records sold worldwide. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), a female songwriter (18), and a female producer (15). Carey is the highest-certified female artist in the United States and 10th overall, with 72 million certified album units. In 2008, she was named one of Time's annual 100 most influential artists and entertainers in the world. Billboard named her the "top-charting female solo artist", based on both album and song chart success in 2019. Carey has won 5 Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 15 Billboard Music Awards and eight Guinness World Records. An inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, she is credited for inspiring multiple generations of pop and R&B artists, and for merging hip hop with pop music through her crossover collaborations.

Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking
Every breath with you
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
Oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds
And that's what I've got to face
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
But to wait for you is
All I can do
And that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
That's the chance I've qot to take
Take a look at me now
The lyrics of Mariah Carey's song "Against All Odds" express the deep longing and heartache of someone who has been left behind by the person they love. The opening lines reveal this pain as the singer wonders how she can "just let you walk away" and "just let you leave without a trace." She acknowledges that she is "taking every breath" with her beloved and cannot imagine life without them. The chorus emphasizes the singer's sense of loss as she laments that there is now "just an empty space" without her love. The singer also reflects on the depth of the relationship they shared, noting that her partner was the only person who really knew her. This intimacy makes the separation all the more painful.
The latter part of the song shifts slightly, as the singer acknowledges that there is very little she can do to change the situation. She wishes that her love would turn around and see her crying, to recognize the hurt she is experiencing. But she also realizes that this plea is futile, as the only thing left to do is "wait for you" and accept that the odds are against their reunion. Nevertheless, the song ends on a note of perseverance, as the singer vows to continue standing in the face of heartbreak and to take the chance of hoping for a future with her love.

How can I just let you walk away
I can't bear the thought of you leaving without a fight
Just let you leave without a trace
I want you to stay in my life and not disappear like you never existed
When I stand here taking, every breath with you
I can't imagine my life without you, you bring meaning to my existence
You're the only one who really knew me at all
You completely understood me, all my thoughts and feelings, no one knows me like you do
How can you just walk away from me
It's hard to accept that you're leaving when we've shared so much together
When all I can do is watch you leave
I feel helpless and powerless as you walk out of my life
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
We've been through good and bad times together, and those memories will always stay with me
And even shared the tears
We've had our moments of sadness, but we were there for each other
So take a look at me now
I want you to see that I'm still here, waiting for you
Oh there's just an empty space
Without you, my world feels empty and lonely
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Everything around me reminds me of you, but you're not here anymore
Just the memory of your face
I hold onto the image of your face in my mind to keep you close to me
'Cause there's just an empty space
My heart and my life are incomplete without you
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's unlikely that we'll be together again, but I still hope for it
And that's what I've got to face
I have to accept the reality that things may never be the same between us
I wish I could just make you turn around
I want to change your mind and make you stay with me
Turn around and see me cry
I want you to see how much your leaving is hurting me
There's so much I need to say to you
There are things I need to tell you that I never got the chance to say
So many reasons why
I need you to know why our relationship is so important to me
But to wait for you is all I can do
I don't know what else to do besides waiting for you to come back
And you coming back to me is against all odds
I know it's a long shot, but I'll keep hoping for your return
That's the chance I've got to take
I'm willing to take the risk of waiting for you, no matter how small the chance of success
'Cause I'll still be standing here
No matter what happens, I'll still be here, waiting for you
