Carey's self-titled debut album was released under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, who married her three years later. She gained further worldwide success with the albums Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995). Their singles include "Hero", "Without You", "Fantasy", "Always Be My Baby", and "One Sweet Day", which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (1990s) and was the longest running number one song of the decade. After separating from Mottola, Carey adopted a new urban image and incorporated more elements of hip hop with the album Butterfly (1997). She left Columbia in 2001 after eleven consecutive years of U.S. number-one singles and signed a $100 million record deal with Virgin Records.
Following Carey's highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown and the failure of the film Glitter (2001) and its soundtrack, Virgin bought out her contract and she signed with Island Records the following year. After a comparatively unsuccessful period, Carey returned to the top of the charts with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), which became the best-selling album in the US and the world's second best-selling album of 2005. Its second single, "We Belong Together", topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (2000s). She won the Breakthrough Actress Performance award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for her role in the 2009 film Precious. Carey's subsequent ventures included being an American Idol judge, starring in the docu-series Mariah's World, appearing in the films The Butler (2013), A Christmas Melody (2015), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017), performing at two Las Vegas concert residencies, and publishing her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey in 2020.
Carey is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 220 million records sold worldwide. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), a female songwriter (18), and a female producer (15). Carey is the highest-certified female artist in the United States and 10th overall, with 72 million certified album units. In 2008, she was named one of Time's annual 100 most influential artists and entertainers in the world. Billboard named her the "top-charting female solo artist", based on both album and song chart success in 2019. Carey has won 5 Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 15 Billboard Music Awards and eight Guinness World Records. An inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, she is credited for inspiring multiple generations of pop and R&B artists, and for merging hip hop with pop music through her crossover collaborations.

The room's all aglow
Outside the December wind blows
Away in the distance
The carolers sing in the snow
Everybody's laughing
The world is celebrating
And everyone's so happy
Because I miss you
Most at Christmas time
And I can't get you
Get you off my mind
Every other season comes along
And I'm all right
But then I miss you
Most at Christmas time
I gaze out the window
This cold winter's night
At all of the twinkling lights
Alone in the darkness
Remembering when you were mine, yeah
Everybody's smiling
The whole world is rejoicing
And everyone's embracing
Except for you and I
Baby I miss you
Most at Christmas time
And I can't get you, no no no
Get you off my mind
Every other season comes along
And I'm all right
But then I miss you
Most at Christmas time
In the springtime
Those memories start to fade
With the April rain
Through the summer days
Till autumn's leaves are gone
I get by without you
Till the snow begins to fall
And then I miss you
Most at Christmas time
And I can't get you, no no no
Get you off my mind
Every other season comes along
And I'm all right
But then I miss you
Most at Christmas time
In Mariah Carey's "Miss You" song, the singer talks about the moments that make Christmas holidays memorable, with people getting into the celebrations and singing carols outside, while she's inside, looking outside the window, remembering a deeper connection that is no longer there in the present. She goes on to express her deep longing for her ex, which is particularly intensified during Christmas, while describing the imagery of the cold winter season. The lyrics express the loneliness and the struggles of trying to move on, particularly during the festive period.
Mariah Carey's "Miss You" is a classic and timeless Christmas song, and it's relatable to many people who have gone through heartbreak or miss someone they love. The lyrics are emotionally charged, and the sentimentality makes it an appropriate song for the festive period. One of the interesting aspects of this song is that it is one of the few original songs that have become a staple in Christmas music playlists despite it not being a traditional Christmas carol.
Another interesting aspect of this song is that it was released as a B-side to her first-ever single, "Vision of Love," but despite not being the A-side, it still gained immense popularity. It has also been covered by several other artists and has become a holiday classic. Interestingly, Mariah Carey did not write this song alone, as it was co-written by musicians such as Walter Afanasieff, who composed its music as well.
Furthermore, the music video for the song underscores the sentimental emotions of the lyrics with Mariah Carey, standing in a purple dress in front of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, as snow falls outside. The music video is known for its vintage clothing style and the sentimental imagery that complements the holiday-themed lyrics. Notably, the song has also been used in several movies, including "The Family Stone," "Love Actually," and "The Holiday."
In summary, "Miss You" by Mariah Carey is a heart-warming song that poignantly depicts the emotions of missing someone special, particularly during the Christmas period. Its evocative lyrics underscore the loneliness of the holiday season and the longing for the connection that once was there. As such, it has become a classic Christmas song.
