Heartbreak
Mariah Carey feat. Jay Z Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gypsy, sittin' lookin' pretty
A broken rose and laughin' eyes
You're a mystery
Always runnin' wild
Like a child without a home
You're always searching
Searching for a feeling
But it's easy come and easy go, oh

I'm sorry but it's true
You're bringin' on the heartache
Takin' all the best of me
Oh, can't you see
You got the best of me
Oh, can't you see

You're bringin' on the heartbreak, mm
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
Can't you see, oh

You're such a secret
Misty eyed and shady
Baby, how you hold the key
Oh, you're like a candle
Your flame slowly fadin'
Burnin' out and burnin' me
Can't you see
Just tryin' to say to you

You're bringin' on the heartache
Takin' all the best of me
Oh, can't you see
You got the best of me
Oh, can't you see

You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
Can't you see
Can't you see

No

You got the best of me
Oh, can't you see (oh, can't you see)
You got the best of me (you got the best of me)
Oh, can't you see (oh, can't you see)

You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache
You're bringin' on the heartbreak

Overall Meaning

In Mariah Carey's song "Bringin' on the Heartbreak," the lyrics describe a mysterious and elusive person, who is compared to a gypsy with laughing eyes and a broken rose. This person is always searching for a feeling, but they "easy come and easy go." The singer of the song apologizes but admits that this person is "bringin' on the heartache," and taking "all the best" of them. The person is described as a secret, with misty eyes and a shady demeanor, and the singer compares them to a candle whose flame is slowly fading, burning out and hurting the singer.

The overall theme of the song is one of unrequited love, where the singer is trying to convey to the subject of the song how they are causing heartache and taking advantage of the singer's emotions. The tone of the song is melancholic and reflective, with a slow and sweet melody that underscores the longing and yearning the singer feels. The comparison to a gypsy and a candle creates a sense of fleetingness and transience, reinforcing the idea that this person is elusive and hard to pin down.

Same.

Although I unfortunately can’t stand any of her music after 2004.

First five albums are amazing!

Butterfly and Rainbow are a nice smooth calm R&B fun albums and are an interesting cool change.

Then albums like Glitter, Charmbracelet, and The Emancipation of Mimi of the early 2000s are the okay ones.

But once the late 2000s started I realize I can’t stand her music from 11th E=MC² to 15th album Caution. But that’s just me and she has a 16th album coming out in 2022.

Earth Boy Sun And Rain.

You have to listen to this with headphones to hear how intricate her layered background vocals are. Her harmonies are heavenly.

Turn the balance down slightly also on the right ear and do the same with the left and listen to the different tones also.

New temp Phone-Ash

I know I am being disrespectful saying she is perfect, but maybe I am just that dumb

John N.

I never knew until the past 5 months that there were background vocals of just Mariah repeating and harmonizing with Jay-Z's rap verses, it really does show how intricately she could style her work.
