Marian Hill wrote "Whisky" in the spring of 2013 and sent it to dozens of blogs hoping to catch some attention. The song created a buzz, and the following year, the duo released their first EP, Play, as well as a 7" single, "Lips." They received mainstream exposure when Romanian pop star Inna credited them as co-writers of her song "Diggy Down," which incorporated the hook of Marian Hill's "Got It." The pair signed to Photo Finish/Republic Records in early 2015 and released Sway, a seven-track EP.
In 2016, the duo issued their full-length debut album, Act One, featuring the number 21 single "Down." The LP reached number 42 on the Billboard 200. Their remix of Billie Eilish's single "Bellyache" appeared in 2017. Early 2018 saw the release of the punchy single "Subtle Thing," followed by an appearance at that year's Coachella Festival. Marian Hill's second long-player, Unusual, arrived in May 2018 and returned them to the U.S. albums chart as well as charting in France. August 2019 saw the duo issue the single "Take a Number," which featured a guest spot from Moroccan-American singer, songwriter, model, and activist Dounia. The song appeared on Marian Hill's self-released 2020 EP Was It Not. After collaborating with Roman Kouder on "Bonjour," they released "oOo that's my type" with Yung Baby Tate in 2021. This was followed by additional singles "omg" and "it never ends." ~ Paul Simpson

Marian Hill Lyrics

That you've been ignoring
You've been looking at me with
I don't know what exactly, but it's boring
Play it cool, but I see through it
You should listen to the music
Boy, I know you want it so you better get up on it
Or you'll lose it, lose it, lose it
Mind if I slow you down?
No reply, you'll come round
Love to watch you try and turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me
Love to watch you try and turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me
Baby, could you shut up?
'Cause I don't need you to come up with excuses
I just need your eyes on me
So I can see you watching me move it, move it, move it
So soft and cryptic
Oh, while you listen to the music
Boy I know you want it so you better get up on it
Or you'll lose it, I'll prove it
Mind if I take you down?
Get you high, am I allowed?
Love to watch you try to turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me
Love and watch you try to turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me
Know that any, know that any, know that any, know that any
Know that any minute you'll be back to me
Love to watch you talk, love to watch you talk
Feel me, feel me, feel me
Back, back, back, back, back, ba-ba-ba-ba
While you listen, while you listen
While you, while you listen to the music
While you listen, while you listen
While you, while you listen to the music
Love to watch you try and turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back
Love to watch you try to turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me
In "Back to Me," Marian Hill sings of the confusion surrounding the signals someone is sending when they're attracted to another person. The singer describes a situation where they have been flirting with someone who seems interested but also hesitant. The singer is confident in their attraction to the other person, but they sense that the other person is playing it cool. The first verse suggests that the singer has been giving subtle hints to the other person that they've ignored, while the other person's signals have been ambiguous and uninteresting. In the following verse, the singer confronts the other person, asking them to stop making excuses and to pay attention to them. They allude to the fact that they know the other person has a desire for them, but they're not acting on it.
The chorus repeats the phrase "love to watch you try to turn your back to me when I know that any minute you'll be back to me." This repetition suggests that the singer will continue to be persistent and knows that the other person will not be able to resist their advances for too long. The song ends with the singer encouraging the other person to enjoy their attraction and stop resisting.
Overall, "Back to Me" is a song about the dance of attraction and the mixed signals that can make it difficult to navigate.
