Marian Hill wrote "Whisky" in the spring of 2013 and sent it to dozens of blogs hoping to catch some attention. The song created a buzz, and the following year, the duo released their first EP, Play, as well as a 7" single, "Lips." They received mainstream exposure when Romanian pop star Inna credited them as co-writers of her song "Diggy Down," which incorporated the hook of Marian Hill's "Got It." The pair signed to Photo Finish/Republic Records in early 2015 and released Sway, a seven-track EP.
In 2016, the duo issued their full-length debut album, Act One, featuring the number 21 single "Down." The LP reached number 42 on the Billboard 200. Their remix of Billie Eilish's single "Bellyache" appeared in 2017. Early 2018 saw the release of the punchy single "Subtle Thing," followed by an appearance at that year's Coachella Festival. Marian Hill's second long-player, Unusual, arrived in May 2018 and returned them to the U.S. albums chart as well as charting in France. August 2019 saw the duo issue the single "Take a Number," which featured a guest spot from Moroccan-American singer, songwriter, model, and activist Dounia. The song appeared on Marian Hill's self-released 2020 EP Was It Not. After collaborating with Roman Kouder on "Bonjour," they released "oOo that's my type" with Yung Baby Tate in 2021. This was followed by additional singles "omg" and "it never ends." ~ Paul Simpson

I don't know if I'll ever see you again
Why
I thought I had you in the palm of my hand
I thought about it and now I understand
Why
You were always looking at me sideways
Tripping on me all day, puzzling you
You were always looking at me sideways
Tripping on me all day, puzzling you
I'm not the kind of girl that likes to hold hands
I tend to run from it as fast as I can
Why
I couldn't sleep the first night I let you in
I said I didn't wanna see you again
I lied
You were always looking at me sideways
Tripping on me all day, puzzling you
You were always looking at me sideways
Tripping on me all day, puzzling you
Never told you this
But I think it's true
We were always me
We were never you
I don't wanna say you were bad for me
Wonder if you'd say you were sad to leave?
I don't wanna say you were bad for me
You were always looking at me sideways
Tripping on me all day, puzzling you
You were always looking at me sideways
Tripping on me all day, puzzling you
The lyrics of "Sideways" by Marian Hill convey a sense of reflection and introspection on a past relationship. The opening verses describe a sense of uncertainty and longing, with the singer questioning if they will ever see the other person again, expressing confusion and a desire for clarity.
As the song progresses, there is a realization that the dynamic of the relationship was not as straightforward as initially perceived. The singer acknowledges that they thought they had the other person figuratively in the palm of their hand, and now understand that it was not as simple as they believed. This revelation adds depth to the emotional complexity of the connection.
The chorus highlights the theme of miscommunication and misinterpretation within the relationship, with the repeated phrases "You were always looking at me sideways / Tripping on me all day, puzzling you" suggesting a lack of understanding and a constant feeling of being scrutinized or misunderstood by the other person. This adds a layer of tension and unease to the narrative.
The closing verses of the song bring a sense of closure and acceptance, with the singer reflecting on the impact of the relationship. There is a realization that the two individuals in the relationship were fundamentally different, with the singer acknowledging that they were "always me" and the other person was "never you." This acknowledgment of incompatibility leads to a bittersweet recognition that while the relationship may not have been entirely positive, there was still a sense of connection and shared experience.
