I'm A Loser
Marianne Faithfull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Of all the love I have won or have lost
There is one love I should never have crossed.
He was a boy in a million, my friend,
I should have known he would win in the end.

[Chorus]
I'm a loser
And I lost someone who's near to me.
I'm a loser
And I'm not what I appear to be.

Although I laugh and I act like a clown,
Beneath this mask I am wearing a frown.
My tears are falling like rain from the sky,
Is it for him or myself that I cry ?

[Chorus: x2]

What have I done to deserve such a fate ?
I realize I have left it too late
And so it's true pride comes before a fall,
I'm telling you so that you won't lose all.

[Chorus]

I'm a loser.

Overall Meaning

In Marianne Faithfull's song "I'm A Loser," she speaks about a love that she should have never gotten involved with. Although she has loved and lost before, there was something different about this particular love. It is evident that the person she is singing about was more than just a lover, as she calls him a "boy in a million, my friend." This person was important to her in more ways than one, perhaps someone who she thought was a soulmate or lifelong friend. Despite this, she acknowledges that he was always going to come out on top in the end, implying that there was something unrequited about their affection.

Despite trying to put on a brave face and pretending to be happy through humor, she is deeply hurt by the loss. There is a stark contrast between how she appears to be on the outside and what is going on inside her head, with her tears falling like rain from the sky. It is unclear whether she is crying for him or herself, but it could be a combination of both.

The lyrics suggest that she knows she is at fault for losing this important person. She wonders what she could have done differently to prevent her fate, but she realizes that it is too late. In the end, she warns others that pride can lead to a downfall, a sentiment that is echoed in the title of the song.

Love this arrangement.

Stunningly under-rated singer and one of my favourite Beatle covers. Attention must be paid! Please listen to her sing SALLY FREE & EASY and THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE amongst her other folk covers...astonishing.
