Plaisir D'Amour
Marianne Faithfull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment
Chagrin d'amour
Dure toute la vie

Your eyes kissed mine
I saw the love in them shine
But you gave me heaven right then
When your eyes kissed mine

Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment
Chagrin d'amour
Dure toute la vie

My love loves me
And all the wonders I see
But the rainbow
Shines in my window
My love loves me

Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment

Chagrin d'amour
Dure toute la vie

Overall Meaning

The song Plaisir D'Amour by Marianne Faithfull explores the fleeting nature of love and the painful lasting effects of heartbreak. The lyrics suggest that the pleasure of romantic love is short-lived and temporary, but the pain of heartbreak can last a lifetime. The opening lines, "Plaisir d'amour ne dure qu'un moment, chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie" which translates to "The pleasure of love lasts only a moment, the pain of love lasts a lifetime", beautifully captures the essence of this idea.

In the second stanza, Marianne describes a moment when she felt completely loved and elevated by her partner's gaze. However, this momentary pleasure was not enough to sustain their love, and they eventually experienced the pain of heartbreak. The third and final stanza provides some hope, as Marianne reflects on the love she still shares with her partner and the beauty she sees in the world around her. Despite the knowledge that love may end in pain, she chooses to focus on the joy it brings in the present moment.

Overall, Plaisir D'Amour is a reflection on the transience of romantic love and the importance of cherishing each moment of joy it brings, even if it is fleeting. It's a reminder to be grateful for the love we have in the present moment, as we never know when it will come to an end.

Marianne Faithfull trying to be Joan Baez.

@pagpanghupaw6031

It's an old french song (1784). Many singers sang, sing and will sing this song, I don't believe she's trying to be Joan Baez ;)

@andreasblauer709

@@pagpanghupaw6031 Faithfull became a fan of Baez after first hearing the folk singer on a Newport Jazz Festival compilation record in 1961. Since then, she had "Bought Baez records by the bundle," according to Altham. Marianne covered "What Have The Done To The Rain", "House Of The Rising Sun", "Fare Thee Well", "Once I Had a Sweetheart", "Wild Mountain Thyme", ,,, , all songs previously recorded by Joan on her bestselling albums. We sometimes forget how influental Joan was in the 60s and 70s.
