She is the fifth of seven children by Auschwitz survivor Otto Rosenberg, who was part Roma, and recorded her first song, Mr. Paul McCartney, after winning a talent contest at age fourteen.
Her major hits include Fremder Mann, Er gehört zu mir (also recorded in English as How Can I Go Now?), Lieder der Nacht and Marleen, all of which were very successful in West Germany in the early and mid-1970s. She also achieved chart success in other European territories including Austria and the Netherlands. Rosenberg is also considered a gay icon in several countries, like the Netherlands and her native Germany.
In 2004, Rosenberg re-released Marleen in a remixed version and with a new promotional video, the single reached # 33 on the official German Charts as compiled by Media Control. The follow-up single Er Gehört Zu Mir reached # 77. Both singles were taken from her 2004 disco flavoured album Für Immer Wie Heute which reached # 12 on the German Album charts.

Laß nicht zu
Daß ich jetzt was Dummes tu.
Wärst du doch nur aus Stein
Viels würde anders sein.
Herz aus Glas
Wie leicht es bricht
Gerade das
Ich will ihm zeigen
Es geht auch ohne ihn
Sonst war doch alles ohne Sinn.
Irgendwann hat man Illusionen
Und man hält sie fest
Wie ein Spielzeug
Das man sich nicht nehmen läßt
Doch darüber bin ich nun hinaus
Und aus ist eben Schluß vorbei.
Herz aus Glas
Was auch geschieht
Laß nicht zu
Daß er es sieht.
Wie es mit uns war
Ist jetzt vorbei
Jeder von uns ist wieder frei.
Er und ich
Wir beide
Hatten eine schöne Zeit.
Nun aber ebenist es doch soweit
Daß jeder seine eignen Wege geht.
Ich gesteh
Die ersten Wochen
Fühlte ich mich sehr allein
Und es konnte wohl auch
Gar nicht anders sein
Doch heute weiß ich
Ja es geht auch so
Ja und aus ist Schluß
Vergessen und vorbei.
Herz aus Glas
Laß nicht zu
Daß ich jetzt was Dummes tu.
Wärst du doch nur aus Stein
Viels würde anders sein.
Herz aus Glas
Wie leicht es bricht
Gerade das
Das will ich nicht.
Ich will ihm zeigen
Es geht auch ohne ihn
Sonst war doch alles ohne Sinn.
The song "Herz aus Glas" by Marianne Rosenberg is a heartrending ballad about the end of a relationship. The title itself means "Heart of Glass," which reflects the vulnerability of the heart in love. In the first stanza, the singer implores her heart not to let her do anything foolish because of the pain she feels. She wishes her heart was made of stone so that it wouldn't break so easily. The second stanza is all about letting go of illusions and moving on from a broken relationship. The singer admits that holding onto illusions is like holding onto a beloved toy that one can't bear to give up. However, she has now moved on from that phase and has accepted that it's time to let the relationship go.
In the third stanza, the singer asks her heart not to let her former partner see her in a vulnerable state. She acknowledges that their relationship has ended, and they are both free to go their own ways. The final stanza talks about the singer's realization that she can survive on her own, even though she missed her partner terribly at the beginning. She knows that everything comes to an end, and she is now looking forward to a new beginning.
Overall, "Herz aus Glas" is a poignant song about the pain of heartbreak and the importance of moving forward. It is an emotional ballad that many listeners can relate to, as it is a universal experience.
