Everybody's looking at me like
I'm made of stone
I'm made of stone
I'll take you to the far side
Where it won't be wrong
'Cause everybody wants to be made of stone
We're golden
We're golden
We're golden
In Marika Hackman's song "Any Human Friend," the lyrics depict a sense of isolation and longing to belong. The phrase "Meet me on the outside, 'cause we don't belong" suggests that the singer feels like an outsider, disconnected from others. The line "Everybody's looking at me like I'm made of stone" further emphasizes this feeling of being seen as unfeeling or unapproachable. The repetition of "I'm made of stone" reinforces the idea of emotional detachment and a desire to protect oneself from vulnerability.
The next lines, "I'll take you to the far side where it won't be wrong, 'Cause everybody wants to be made of stone," suggest a longing for a deeper connection with someone who understands this desire for emotional invulnerability. The phrase "We're golden" is repeated multiple times, possibly expressing a shared understanding and bond between the singer and the person they're addressing. Overall, the lyrics convey a yearning to find connection, to step outside the confines of societal expectations, and to be understood for who they truly are.
