You Come Down
Marika Hackman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You come down with your thorns in your crown
Tearing the flesh from your skull
And the trick of the brain is the trickle in vein
As it drips from your ears and your nostril
But you could always make the lakes fill up

Take my hand leave my heart to the damned
As you build me a bed in the earth
Peel back my skin let the daffodils in
As you bury me back to my birth
But you could always make me hurt

Cause I will go to the ends of the Earth
Just to hear you sing
Make no mistake, but the heartache of my weight
Feels like the breath of the wind
Without the force to push me on

Plough through the soil, hear the crunch of the foil
As you unwrap the bread of my heart
Chew through the bones, close your ears to the moans
Of you I now am a part
But how long can you hold on to you hair?

Take my lungs, pour the songs that we've sung
Into a ready-made flask
Mouth open wide as you drink it inside

Drips through the hole in your mask
But you could always make me hurt

Overall Meaning

In Marika Hackman's song "You Come Down," the lyrics describe a relationship that is toxic, yet still alluring. The analogy of the person being referred to as having "thorns in [their] crown" displays the idea that their presence will wound the other person. Their tricks and lies are like a poison that drips from the ear and nostril--inflicting harm silently. However, the lyrics also reveal that the singer has a strong attachment to the person, despite their pain. The idea that the person could "make the lakes fill up" suggests that they still have power over the singer to draw them in.

The theme of death is present in the lyric "Take my hand, leave my heart to the damned / As you build me a bed in the earth / Peel back my skin, let the daffodils in / As you bury me back to my birth." The singer is willing to let the person take control and even bury them alive, as long as it means the person will stay with them. The line "But you could always make me hurt" reinforces the idea that the person's love is harmful, but the singer would still pursue them.

Possibly one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard.

Russell James

Of the many things I like about your songs is the contrast between the whispering, lilting harmony of your voice and acoustic guitar against the stark and disturbing images you describe. Can you possibly be as intense as your songs portray? You have a monumental talent, please keep recording!

Sol Bergé

marika, you are like a little fairy who lives in the woods, you’re a magical being with magical words and hands. i think the world it’s a little bit prettier since you and your music exists. this is something much older than us

Vincent Turcot

Just discovered this artist, and I was instantly hooked! Really wonderful voice and I'm very blown away by how theatrical is the music! The instrument, her voice, all blend so well together! Great music to listen to when drawing as well! :D

Ella

This one's got a Simon & Garfunkel feel... very haunting and beautiful.
