In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Don't bother to resist, or I'll beat you
It's not your fault that you're always wrong
The weak ones are there to justify the strong
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
It's all relative to the size of your steeple
You can't see the forest for the trees
You can't smell your own shit on your knees
There's no time to discriminate
Hate every motherfucker
That's in your way
Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it's hard to be clean
The worms will live in every host
It's hard to pick which one they eat the most
The horrible people, the horrible people
It's as anatomic as the size of your steeple
Capitalism has made it this way
Old-fashioned fascism will take it away
Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it's hard to be clean
There's no time to discriminate

The song The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson is a commentary on the superficiality and destructive nature of society's obsession with appearances and social status. The lyrics express Marilyn Manson's disdain for those who consider themselves "beautiful" and use their power to oppress and manipulate those they view as weak or inferior. He is calling out the hypocrisy of those who claim to be virtuous and superior, while at the same time engaging in cruel and unjust behavior.
The chorus of the song, "The beautiful people, the beautiful people, it's all relative to the size of your steeple," suggests that one's social status and power are determined by the height of their metaphorical "steeple," or the level of importance they are given by society. This is a critique of the capitalist system, in which wealth and social status are valued over individual worth and contribution to society.
The line "If you live with apes man, it's hard to be clean" is an indictment of the idea that individuals are shaped by their environment. Manson is suggesting that if one associates with morally bankrupt and corrupt individuals, it is difficult to maintain one's own sense of morality and integrity.
Overall, The Beautiful People is a poignant commentary on the falsehoods inherent in societal constructs that elevate superficiality and status over individual worth and morality.
