Breaking the Same Old Ground
Marilyn Manson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And then I found how to be what you want
I was out looking for something new
Digging too deep
And now it’s too late
We just keep on
Breaking the same old ground
Breaking the same old ground
So you think that I asked for this
Let me show you
What I think of your lips
And you think that I asked for this
Come on
Use your fist

And then I found how to be what you want
When I was out looking for something new
Digging too deep
And now it’s too late
We just keep on
Breaking the same old ground
Breaking the same old ground
We just keep on
Breaking the same old ground

So you think that I asked for this
Well, let me show you
What I think of your lips
And you think that I asked for this
Come on
Use your fist

When I found how to be what you want
I was out looking for something new
Digging too deep
Now it’s too late
We just keep on
Breaking the same old ground
We just keep on
Breaking the same old ground

Shh
Shh
I am owned by death
And
I’m in love with oblivion
I am owned by death

And
I’m in love with oblivion

Overall Meaning

In this song, Marilyn Manson expresses a sense of frustration and resignation in his own personal search for something new and meaningful. He conveys a feeling of having dug too deep, having gone too far in his search, and having found something too late, as if he's lost something important or valuable along the way. The refrain of "breaking the same old ground" suggests that, no matter how hard he tries, Manson feels trapped in a cycle of repeating the same actions, making the same mistakes, and ultimately not finding what he's looking for. The final lines, "I am owned by death // And I'm in love with oblivion," suggest that Manson has perhaps given up on the idea of finding true fulfillment altogether, accepting that his fate is ultimately to be consumed by the void.

The verses of the song are relatively straightforward, stating simply that Manson has been searching for something new and different, but now feels that he's gone too far to turn back, and that he's stuck in a cycle of repetition. The chorus, which repeats the same words each time, serves primarily to drive home the idea of being stuck, of being unable to move forward or find what one is looking for. The final lines of "shh // shh" suggest perhaps a sense of resignation or acceptance, as if Manson is telling himself to be quiet, to stop searching, and simply accept his fate.

@ Jean Pierre Polnareff THANK YOU!! Finally someone who thinks the same. In my opinion, The Golden Age Of Grotesque is, without a doubt, his best album and era. Every song is a masterpiece. Hit after hit after hit.

The whole album is a masterpiece. It's got great lyrics, depth, and the sound is really amazing. I understand that people don't like it because how much they love Antichrist Superstar.. But this.. This is too great for that. Just give it time.
