In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Crowded morgue of mistakes
The sun stopped its smile
And frowned on me too
My re-built/re-mastered heart
Is smashed into its faces
And its face is confused
I cut my throat in two
For being a fool
But I didn't forgiveness
It was regret
Not an apology
It was regret
Regret

You're with me, against me
But the only thing forever is hate
I forget what I saw
Before and after that day
I'd trade all I was worth
To make myself in to
The handsomest gun
And put the diamond bullet

The song "Disengaged" by Marilyn Manson is a dark and introspective piece about a person who is struggling with feelings of regret for their past mistakes while also feeling disconnected from the world around them. The lyrics suggest that the singer is looking at a "crowded morgue of mistakes," indicating that they have made many poor choices in their life that have led them to this point. They also mention that the sun has "stopped its smile" and "frowned" on them, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the singer's own feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
The chorus of the song repeats the word "disengaged," which can be seen as a way for the singer to describe their feelings of detachment from the world around them. They feel as though they are no longer connected to others and have become isolated in their own thoughts and emotions. The lyrics also touch on themes of anger and hate, with the line "the only thing forever is hate" suggesting that the singer has become disillusioned with the world and feels like they have nothing left to hold onto except their own feelings of resentment.
Overall, "Disengaged" is a powerful and emotionally charged song that explores themes of regret, detachment, and disillusionment. The lyrics are deeply introspective and offer a glimpse into the mind of someone who is struggling to come to terms with their own mistakes and feelings of emptiness.

Crowded morgue of mistakes
A place where my past blunders are kept in great numbers
The sun stopped its smile
I sense the sun is no longer shining upon me
And frowned on me too
It has transformed into a scowl aimed at me
My re-built/re-mastered heart
I've modified my heart to work better
Is smashed into its faces
But now, it has been shattered into a million pieces just like before
And its face is confused
Even my heart doesn't know what's happening to it
I cut my throat in two
I mutilated myself and suffered in agony
I said sorry to you
I apologized to you
For being a fool
For acting foolishly
But I didn't forgiveness
But I didn't receive forgiveness
It was regret
Instead, I felt entirely sorry for what I had done
Not an apology
The sorry wasn't enough
It was regret
Even I knew that my actions and consequence needed a genuine apology
