In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Trade them in for dollar bills
Cake up on some makeup to cover all those lines
Wake up and stop shaking, 'cause you're just wasting time
Don't you want some of this?
Don't you need some of this?
You ride, but cannot be ridden
Pinch this tiny heart of mine, wrap it up in soiled twine
You never read what you've written
I'll be your lover, I'll be forever
I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high
I'll be your lover, I'll be forever
I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high
Don't you want some of this?
Don't you need some of this?
Don't you want some of this?
Don't you need some of this?
You shove your hair down my throat
I feel your fingers in me, me
Tear this bitter fruit to mess, wrap it in your soiled dress
Now, you must spit out the seeds
I'll be your lover, I'll be forever
I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high
I'll be your lover, I'll be forever
I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high
Anything, when I'm high
Anything, when I'm high
I'll be your lover, I'll be forever
I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high
I'll be your lover, I'll be forever
I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high
Anything, when I'm high
All dried up and tied up, forever
All fucked up and dead to the world
All dried up and tied up, forever
All fucked up and dead to the world
All dried up and tied up, forever
All fucked up and dead to the world
All dried up and tied up, forever
All fucked up and dead to the world
The lyrics to Marilyn Manson's song, "Dried up Tied and Dead to the World" are quite cryptic and require a deep understanding of the artist's persona and previous works. The opening lines, "You cut off all of your fingers/ Trade them in for dollar bills/ Cake on some more make-up/ To cover up all those lines," can be interpreted as a metaphorical representation of society's pressure on people to conform to certain standards of beauty and success. The use of cutting off fingers is a symbolism of self-mutilation or self-destruction while trading them for dollar bills refers to selling oneself to capitalism.
The lines, "Wake up and stop shaking/ Don't you want some of this?/ Don't you need some of this?" can be seen as addressing the listener's addiction to drugs, asking them to wake up from a stupor and shake off their reliance on substances. In contrast, the lines "I'll be your lover, I'll be forever/ I'll be tomorrow, I am anything when I'm high" evoke a persona built on self-gratification and indulgence. This persona allows the artist to become anything he wants when he's high, essentially losing himself in the moment.
"You never read what you've written" can be interpreted as the singer addressing their audience, calling out their lack of reflection or introspection in their lives. The line "You shove your hair down my throat/ I feel your fingers in me" can be seen as an allusion to sexual power-play, conveying the idea of taking control and dominance through physical manipulation.
The final lines, "Now you must spit out the seeds/ All dried up and tied up forever/ All fucked up and dead to the world" can be seen as a commentary on the self-destructive tendencies of individuals. The reference to "spitting out the seeds" can represent the negative consequences of one's actions catching up with them.
