In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Marilyn Manson Lyrics

I do a crooked little dance with my funny little monkey
What I want what I want is just your children
I hate what I have become to escape what I hated being
Calliopenis envy from your daddy
You're not gonna hear what he don't want to hear
What I say disgusts him
"Let's do a funny little dance with my funny little monkey"
The black keys
Actually, he loves you
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
Come along, kiddie winkies!
They try to blink me not to think me
Don't want to bring me out
I am the rotten teeth my fists are lined with suckers
My prison skins an eyesore-mirror-sketch-pad
I am your son
Your dad
You fag
I am your fad
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
Here we are, children! Come and get your lollipops!
I have to take your voice and and stick my fingers in it
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
I have to take your voice and and stick my fingers in it
Fuck fuck!
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
The lyrics to "Kiddie Grinder" by Marilyn Manson are graphic and disturbing. The singer ironically sees himself as "the face of piss and shit and sugar" and performs a "crooked little dance with [his] funny little monkey." He admits that what he wants is "just your children," which reveals his twisted desire for innocence and vulnerability. He hates what he's become but cannot escape it. He claims that the "envy" his father has for him (represented by "Calliopenis envy") scares him because he wants to be Manson but cannot accept his dark desires.
The chorus is an introspective look at the character's psyche. He presents his "real head" which is covered by a mask because others cannot handle his true nature. He is full of violent impulses and is represented by "rotten teeth" and a "prison skin." He identifies himself as both the son and the dad, implying that he is both innocent and guilty. The wordplay with "fad" and "fag" shows the character's confusion and self-loathing. The song ends with the character saying he must take others' voices and stick his fingers in them, which implies that he must silence their objections to his actions.
