In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Marilyn Manson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I do a crooked little dance with my funny little monkey
What I want what I want is just your children
I hate what I have become to escape what I hated being
Calliopenis envy from your daddy
You're not gonna hear what he don't want to hear
What I say disgusts him
"Let's do a funny little dance with my funny little monkey"
The black keys
Actually, he loves you
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
Come along, kiddie winkies!
They try to blink me not to think me
Don't want to bring me out
I am the rotten teeth my fists are lined with suckers
My prison skins an eyesore-mirror-sketch-pad
I am your son
Your dad
You fag
I am your fad
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
Here we are, children! Come and get your lollipops!
I have to take your voice and and stick my fingers in it
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
I wear this fucking mask because you cannot handle me
Here is my real head
I have to take your voice and and stick my fingers in it
Fuck fuck!
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
Here is my real head
The lyrics of "Kiddie Grinder" by Marilyn Manson are disturbing and jarring, as would be expected from the artist. Manson describes himself as the "face of piss and shit and sugar," which immediately sets the tone for the dark lyrics to follow. He then talks about doing a "crooked little dance with my funny little monkey," which could be interpreted as a metaphor for his twisted actions and beliefs. Manson's desire for "just your children" is the most disturbing aspect of the song, and he admits to hating what he has become in order to escape what he hated being before.
The second stanza features more language that is difficult to digest. Manson references "Calliopenis envy from your daddy," which could be interpreted as Freudian jealousy between father and son. Manson's words continue to disgust those around him, particularly his father figure, but he revels in the fact that his behavior scares him. The repetition of "here is my real head" throughout the song suggests that Manson is desperate to show his true self, but also realizes that society cannot handle it. The final lines of the song are particularly unsettling, as Manson talks about taking someone's voice and sticking his fingers in it.
