In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Marilyn Manson Lyrics

When he turns the trains on, he makes it go away
Hands are cracked and dirty, and the nails are beetle wings
When he turns the trains on, he unties all of the strings
Tell me something beautiful
Tell me something free
Tell me something beautiful
Then I got my wings
And I never even knew it
When I was a worm
Thought I couldn't get through it
Come, come
Toys all smell like children, and the scab-knees will obey
I'll have to kneel on broomsticks just to make it go away
Then I got my wings
And I never even knew it
When I was a worm
Thought I couldn't get through it
Because today is black
Because there is no turning back
Because your lies have watered me
I have become the strongest weed
Because today is black
Because there is no turning back
Because your lies have watered me
I have become the strongest weed
The taste of metal, disintegrator
Three holes upon the leather belt
It's cut and swollen, the age is showing
There's no one here to save ourselves
This is what you should fear
You are what you should fear
This is what you should fear
You are what you should fear
This is what you should fear
You are what you should fear
This is what you should fear
You are what you should fear
This is what you should fear
You are what you should fear
This is what you should fear
You are what you should fear
The lyrics to Marilyn Manson's "Kinderfeld" speak to the idea of personal demons and inner struggles. The song's title is a combination of the German words "Kinder," meaning children, and "feld," meaning field. Manson sings, "He lives inside my mouth and tells me what to say." This indicates the presence of a controlling force within the singer's mind, which is responsible for what they say and do. When this force is active, represented by the turning on of trains, it is able to make the singer's problems "go away" by untying strings, representing the releasing of emotional burdens.
The chorus of the song is a plea for beauty, freedom, and a desire to escape from the singer's troubles. The lines "Then I got my wings and I never even knew it / When I was a worm, thought I couldn't get through it" suggest a transformation and growth in the singer's personal journey. The reference to toys smelling like children and the need to kneel on broomsticks imply a sense of regression and perhaps a loss of innocence.
The song then takes a dark turn with the lyrics "Because today is black / Because there is no turning back / Because your lies have watered me / I have become the strongest weed." These lines suggest a sense of anger and revenge, as well as the idea that strength can come from adversity. The final lines repeat the chorus, emphasizing the idea that one's own fears can be the most powerful force holding them back.
