In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Hey, Mr. Superstar, I'm your number one fan"
"Hey, Mr. Porno Star, I-I-I-I want you
Hey, Mr. Sickly Star, I wanna get sick from you
Hey, Mr. Fallen Star, don't you know I worship you?
Hey, hey, Mr. Big Rock Star, I wanna grow up just like you"
I wish I could just turn you off
I never wanted this
"Hey, Mr. Super Hate, I just wanna love you
Hey, hey, hey, Mr. Super Fuck, I wanna go down on you
Hey, Mr. Super God, will you answer my prayers?
Hey, hey, hey, Mr. Superman, I wanna be your little girl"
I know that I can turn you on
I wish I could just turn you off
I never wanted this
I know that I can turn you
I wish I could just turn you
I never wanted any of this
I know that I can turn you
I wish I could just turn you
I never, never, never, never, never
Never, never wanted this
You could kill yourself on TV (I wish I was dead)
I wish you'd kill yourself on TV (I wish I was dead)
Will you kill yourself on TV? (I wish I was dead)
We'd like to see you dead (I wish I was dead)
Hey, Mr. Superstar, I'll kill myself for you
Hey, Mr. Superstar, I'll kill you, if I can't have you
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar, super fuck, baby
Superstar
The lyrics of Marilyn Manson's "Mister Superstar" are a scathing commentary on the idolization and worship of celebrities in our culture. The repeated refrain of "Hey, Mr. Superstar" is directed towards various types of celebrities, such as rock stars, porn stars, and even a "superhate" figure. Manson portrays the fanaticism of fans who will do anything to get closer to their idols, declaring "I'll do anything for you" and "I'm your number one fan."
The lyrics then take a darker turn as Manson expresses desire to become sick or even die for his idol. The line "Hey, Mr. fallen star, don't you know I worship you?" represents the disappointment when celebrities fall from their pedestal in the public eye. Manson also addresses the love-hate relationship fans can have with their idols, feeling both attraction and revulsion toward them. Ultimately, the song is a critique of the superficiality and excesses of fame, and the way that it can lead to unhealthy and dangerous obsessions.
