In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Not So Beautiful People
Marilyn Manson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't bother to resist or I'll beat you
It's not your fault that you're always wrong
The weak ones are there to justify the strong
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
It's all relative to the size of your steeple
You can't see the forest for the trees
There's no time to discriminate
Hate every motherfucker that's in your way
Hey, you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
You live with apes, man, it's hard to be clean
Ahh
Ahh
The worms will live in every host
It's hard to pick which one they hate the most
The horrible people, the horrible people
It's all anatomic as the size of your steeple
Capitalism has made it this way
Old-fashioned fascism will take it away
Hey, you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
You live with apes, man, it's hard to be clean
There's no time to discriminate
Hate every motherfucker that's in your way
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
The beautiful people, the beautiful people (ahh)
The beautiful people, the beautiful people (ahh)
The beautiful people, the beautiful people (ahh)
The beautiful people, the beautiful people (ahh)
Hey, you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
You live with apes, man, it's hard to be clean
Hey, you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
You live with apes, man, it's hard to be clean
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
The song "Not So Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson is a commentary on society's obsession with beauty, power, and wealth. The first verse sets the tone for the song with lyrics like "I don't want you, and I don't need you." The song speaks to the way people use and abuse others to get ahead, and how the "weak ones" are often seen as justifying the strength of the "beautiful people." The chorus repeats the phrase "the beautiful people" several times, emphasizing the obsession with beauty in popular culture. The line "It's all relative to the size of your steeple" suggests that people are judged based on their status and power rather than their true worth.
The second verse continues this commentary on society, adding in a critique of capitalism and fascism. The line "Capitalism has made it this way, old-fashioned fascism will take it away" suggests that the current state of society is problematic and unsustainable. The bridge of the song includes the line "you live with apes", emphasizing the base and primal nature of human behavior. The line "it's hard to be clean" implies that it is difficult to maintain one's values and principles in a society that values power and beauty over everything else.
Overall, "Not So Beautiful People" is a critique on society's obsession with beauty and power, while also commenting on the negative effects of capitalism and fascism. The song suggests that the beauty-obsessed culture is unsustainable and ultimately doomed to fail.
