In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Sweet Dreams / Hell
Marilyn Manson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sweet dreams are made of this.
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas.
Everybody's looking for something.
[Chorus:]
Some of them want to use you.
Some of them want to abuse you.
Some of them want to be abused.
[Repeat First Verse]
Sweet dreams are made of this.
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas.
Everybody's looking for something.
[Chorus]
Some of them want to use you.
Some of them want to get used by you.
Some of them want to abuse you.
Some of them want to be abused.
I wanna use you and abuse you.
I wanna know what's inside you.
(Whispering and Moaning:
Hold your head up, movin' on.
Keep your head up, movin' on.)
Movin' on! x3
I'm gonna use you and abuse you.
I'm gonna know what's inside.
Gonna use you and abuse you.
I'm gonna know what's inside you.
The lyrics to Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams/ Hell Outro" reflect a dark and provocative exploration of power dynamics and human desires. The first verse sets the stage by presenting the idea that sweet dreams are what everyone is seeking. It poses the question, "Who am I to disagree?" indicating a sense of resignation or acceptance that these dreams, no matter how twisted or dark, are a part of the human experience.
As the chorus kicks in, the lyrics become more explicit in their depiction of different motives and intentions people have when it comes to relationships. Some individuals want to use others, taking advantage of their vulnerability or naivety. Conversely, there are those who want to be used, craving the validation or attention that comes with it. Additionally, there are those who are drawn to abusive dynamics, either as perpetrators or masochistic individuals seeking pain and degradation.
The repetition of the first verse and chorus reinforces the idea that these desires and power struggles are universal and ingrained in human nature. Manson's statement, "I wanna use you and abuse you, I wanna know what's inside you," expresses a provocative desire to explore the depths of another person, both physically and emotionally. The inclusion of whispered and moaning sounds further adds to the sensual and intense nature of the song.
Overall, "Sweet Dreams/ Hell Outro" delves into the complexities of human relationships, exposing the darker inclinations that exist within us all. It challenges societal norms and highlights the various ways in which power can be wielded and desired in intimate connections.
