In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

You want to lie with me, you're going to be a liar
Hell-flavored, I've got mood poisoning
It must be something that I hate
I'm just a prison of property
Buckets full of better misery
There's not a word for what I want to do to you
There's not a word for what I want to do to you
(There's not a word for what I want to do to you)
[Chorus:]
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
Murder-cute happy-rape
Murder-cute happy, happy, happy-rape
Killer
Murder-cute happy-rape
Murder-cute happy, happy, happy-rape
Killer
I shot your face, but it was as cold as ice
Okay, I'm not his killer
I shot your face, but it was as cold as ice
Okay, I'm not his killer, killer, killer
[Chorus]
One, two, three
One, two, three
One, two, three
One, two, three
(If you get in bed, someone will fall in love
You and me and the devil makes three)
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
There's not a word for what the devil makes me
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
You and me and the devil makes three
You and me, uh, uh, uh
(If you get in bed, someone will fall in love
You and me and the devil makes three)
The lyrics to Marilyn Manson's song "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3" are truly disturbing, as they seem to suggest a dark and twisted relationship between two individuals who are drawn to each other but also repelled by their own desires. The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with Manson singing that he enjoys "rolling a stone up a hill in Hades," which could be a reference to the Greek myth of Sisyphus or simply an allusion to the eternal struggle and suffering that he experiences. He warns his potential partner that if they want to be with him, they will have to be willing to lie and deceive, indicating that he is not interested in any kind of genuine connection, only the thrill of the forbidden.
The chorus of "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3" is particularly sinister, as Manson repeats the phrase "you and me and the devil makes three" over and over again, implying that the attraction between these two people is sinful and demonic in nature. The next verse features some truly disturbing lyrics that suggest violent and non-consensual behavior, such as "murder-cute happy-rape" and "killer." Manson also seems to distance himself from his actions by saying "I shot your face, but it was as cold as ice / Okay, I'm not his killer," which implies that he either did not feel any emotion while committing a violent act or that he is not responsible for his own actions.
Overall, "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3" is a deeply unsettling and disturbing song that paints a picture of a twisted and abusive relationship between two people who are drawn to each other for all the wrong reasons.
