Born in Tennessee but raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Martin gained notice as a back-up singer for such artists as Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh, Don Henley, Tom Petty and Kenny Loggins, touring with Nicks and Walsh. She became a protegee of Doug Morris, then the head of Atlantic Records, who had heard her backing up Nicks on the Rock a Little album and was impressed enough to ask for a demo. He then signed Martin to a two album contract and connected her with Phil Collins for "Separate Lives," part of the soundtrack for the 1985 film White Nights. The song was a number one hit in the U.S. and a Top 5 hit in the United Kingdom.[1]. Her self-titled debut album was released in January 1986, with the single "Night Moves" reaching number 28 on the U.S. charts.[2]. Her second album, 1988's This Is Serious, was notable for containing the song "Possessive Love" written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard. However, neither the single or the album was successful and Atlantic released Martin from her contract, although she continued her career as a back-up vocalist into the 1990s.
PLASTIC LOVE
Marilyn Martin Lyrics

Your eyes can't hide what you're feelin'
But better not get too excited
Just have some fun while we're dancin'
Say hello and say goodbye
We both know just how to play this game
Soon enough it all will end
Now since the night that I met you
My heart has felt kind o' funny
I guess I could say that I'm happy
But maybe I'm goin' crazy
It was just a midnight dance
Must have been some magic in the air
'Cause we didn't stop till dawn
Carried on, I'm sorry
Yes we know that this isn't forever
Nothin's real, but for now we're together
Love is only a game, let's admit it
Why not have some fun?
The party has begun
I'm all dressed up in my sparkles and sequins
Doesn't matter, there's still somethin' missin'
Maybe you can make me happy
By dawn I'm drivin' down the freeway
When I know I should be sleepin'
The lights are shinin' much too brightly
I've heard those secrets they're keepin'
Guess I'm givin' up on love
Now this girl, her touch is cold as ice
They've been talkin' everywhere
I don't care, don't worry
Yes we know that this isn't forever
Nothin's real, but for now we're together
Love is only a game, let's admit it
Why not have some fun?
The party has begun
I'm all dressed up in my sparkles and sequins
Doesn't matter, there's still somethin' missin'
Maybe you can make me happy
I'm just playing games
I know that's plastic love
Dance to the plastic beat
Another morning comes.
The lyrics of Marilyn Martin's song Plastic Love are about a fleeting romance between two people who are in it just for the moment. Nostalgic, the song speaks of the excitement of unexpected kisses and how the eyes can't hide what one is feeling. The singer warns against getting too excited and instead encourages her partner to have some fun while they're together, for they both know that the affair will come to an end. The singer is filled with happiness and wonder because of the feelings she has for the person she is with, alluding to the fact that maybe she is going crazy because of these feelings.
The song continues with the idea of a temporary relationship, emphasizing the knowledge that it is not forever. It speaks of love as only a game, but despite this, the singer encourages her partner to have some fun and enjoy the party that has begun. At the same time, she acknowledges that something is still missing, even though she is all dressed up in sparkles and sequins. As the night progresses, and the two lovers dance to the plastic beat, the singer knows that she is playing games with the idea of temporary love, which she calls "plastic love." As another morning comes, the singer implies that everything is over, and she is driving down the freeway, giving up on love because she knows that this kind of love leads to nothing.
