Bye Bye Baby
Marilyn Monroe Jane Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be in my room alone
Ev'ry Post Meridian
And I'll be with my diary
And that book by Mister Gideon
Bye bye baby,
Remember you're my baby
When they give you the eye
Although I know that you care,
Won't you write and declare
That though on the loose,
You are still on the square,
I'll be gloomy
But send the rainbow to me
Then my shadows will fly,
Though you'll be gone for a while
I know that I'll be smiling With my baby bye and bye
Bye, bye baby,
Remember you're my baby
When they give you the eye,
And just to show that I care,
I will write and declare
That I'm on the loose,
But I'll stay on the square,
I'll be lonely
But even though I'm lonely
There'll be no other guy,
Though I'll be gone for a while
I know that I'll be smiling

With my baby bye and bye
With my baby, bye and bye

Overall Meaning

The song "Bye Bye Baby" was originally performed by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell in the 1953 film, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". The lyrics describe Monroe's character, Lorelei Lee, singing to her fiancé as he prepares to sail away on a business trip. She tells him that although they will be apart, she will keep herself occupied with her diary and a book by Mr. Gideon. The chorus emphasizes her love for him and her hope that he will remain faithful while away. The second verse is sung by Russell's character, Dorothy Shaw, as she reassures her own love interest that she will be true to him as well. The song ends with both women singing together, looking forward to the happy reunion with their men.

The lyrics of "Bye Bye Baby" express the common theme of separation and longing in many love songs. However, what sets it apart is the strong personalities of the two female singers - Lorelei Lee, the blonde bombshell who uses her looks to get what she wants, and Dorothy Shaw, the sarcastic and sassy brunette who is not afraid to speak her mind. Their duet showcases the contrast between their characters and the chemistry they share despite their differences. This song has since become a classic, performed by many artists over the years, including Madonna and Cher.

I had the thrill of playing this on the piano while Jane sang it. The year was 1995.

Wow what a amazing moment, and a wonderful memory.

Marilyn would have been happy to see her co-star still singing a song from their movie in 1995, sadly Marilyn would not have been able to do this considering the poor soul died 33 years before 1995

Have you heard the Jack Benny version? Check out the last Jack Benny Show from old Radio. His band did a version of "Bye Bye Benny". This is my favorite song. It's as you said. I get a great feeling just singing it to myself.

This may be my favorite movie of all time. I just rewatched it with my five year old daughter for the first time in a loooong time. She loved it! And I realized I totally slept on Jane Russell. She’s amazing!
