Homewrecker
Marina & the Diamonds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every boyfriend is the one, until otherwise proven
The good are never easy, the easy never good
And love, it never happens like you think it really should
Deception and perfection are wonderful traits
One will breed love, the other, hate
You'll find me in the lonely hearts
Under 'I'm after a brand new start'
And I don't belong to anyone

They call me homewrecker, homewrecker
They call me homewrecker, homewrecker

Girls and their curls and their gourmet vomit
Boys and their toys and their six inch rockets
We're all very lovely 'til we get to know each other
As we stop becoming friends and we start becoming lovers

And I don't belong to anyone

They call me homewrecker, homewrecker
(I'm only happy when I'm on the run)
They call me homewrecker, homewrecker
(I broke a million hearts just for fun)
They call me homewrecker, homewrecker
(I'm only happy when I'm on the run)
They call me homewrecker, homewrecker
(I broke a million hearts just for fun)

I'm only happy when I'm on the run
I break a million hearts just for fun
I don't belong to anyone
I guess you could say that my life's a mess
But I'm still looking pretty in this dress
I'm the image of deception

When everything is life and death
You may feel like there's nothing left
Instead of love and trust and laughter
What you get is happy never after
But deep down all you want is love
The pure kind we all dream of
But we cannot escape the past
So you and I will never last

'Cause I'm a homewrecker, homewrecker
(I'm only happy when I'm on the ru-u-un)
'Cause I'm a homewrecker, homewrecker
(I break a million hearts just for fu-u-un)
'Cause I'm a homewrecker, homewrecker
(I'm only happy when I'm on the ru-u-un)
'Cause I'm a homewrecker, homewrecker
(I break a million hearts just for fu-u-un)

'Cause I'm a homewrecker, homewrecker

Overall Meaning

The song Homewrecker by Marina and the Diamonds is a commentary on the complexities of romantic relationships and the dichotomy between the good and the bad qualities in people that often leads to heartbreak. The opening lines, “Every boyfriend is the one, until otherwise proven/The good are never easy, the easy never good/And love, it never happens like you think it really should,” set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer of the song is a self-proclaimed homewrecker who believes that she does not belong to anyone and is only happy when she is on the run, breaking a million hearts for fun. She describes herself as “the image of deception” and acknowledges that her life is a mess, but she still looks pretty in her dress.

The chorus, “They call me homewrecker, homewrecker,” is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the label that society has placed on the singer. However, it can also be interpreted as a commentary on how women are often demonized for men’s infidelity, rather than recognizing the responsibility of both parties involved. The second verse introduces the theme of gender roles and stereotypes, with the description of “girls and their curls and their gourmet vomit” and “boys and their toys and their six inch rockets.” The song concludes with a pessimistic outlook on the possibility of finding love and the inevitability of repeating past mistakes.

"Deception and perfection are wonderful traits. One will breed love. The other? Hate."

It's a cool line because it changes meaning depending on the definition of "love" being used...

If "love" is taken to mean a deep connection, then perfection breeds love and deception breeds hate.

If "love" is taken to mean lust, then deception breeds love and perfection breeds hate (jealousy).

This character she created is so incredibly complex. You listen to her songs at first, realizing it's a satire bimbo-y character who uses men and as you listen more, you realize there's so much to the story than that and that she's actually very broken.

"I don't belong to anyone."
If you really listen, there is so much heartbreak. She is this way as a defense mechanism.

If only more writers would create characters with this much dimension to them.

@Ella-xn3lx

electra heart is a masterpiece

@nicolezerone6188

How does she use it as a defense mechanism?

@ulayla1605

Alyssa Baker I KNOW RIGHT and critics say it was a superficial and shallow album? Apparently they don't understand satricial lyricism and an artist poking fun at industries while delivering beautiful vocals and catchy tunes. There are songs related to identity and broken hearts. But critics are just people. Nothing special. Marina is special though
