Marina Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm obsessed with silence
I go home and I lock my door
I can hear the sirens
I see buildings and bars from the window
And I listen to the wind blow
I see people and cars covered in gold
Hard like a rock, cold like stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when you're not there
Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter
Solitaire
I'm in love with the ice-blue, gray skies of England
I'll admit, all I wanna do is get drunk and silent
Watch my life unfold all around me
Like a beautiful garden
I see flowers so tall, they surround me
Oh my heart, it became so hardened
Hard like a rock, cold like stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when you're not there
Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter
Solitaire
And all the other jewels around me
They astounded me at first
I covered up my heart in boundaries
And all the fakes, they called me cursed
But I'm not cursed, I'm not cursed
I was just covered in dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt
Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter

The lyrics of Marina and the Diamondsā song āSolitaireā convey a message of a person who wants to find comfort in silence rather than communicate with others. The first verse describes the desire for silence, and the second verse describes the feeling of being happy to observe from the outside. The chorus emphasizes the rarity and value of solitude and independence, rejecting comparison with the superficiality of others. The third verse seems to reference the painful and isolating experience of being judged and excluded. The overall tone of the song is melancholic, suggesting a person who has been hurt and retreated from others to find comfort in their own company.
The imagery of the song is rich and evocative, describing a landscape that suggests a mood of isolation and introspection. The references to diamonds, gold, and coal create a contrast between the superficiality of wealth and the deeper emotional layers of the singer's inner world. The repetition of "solitaire" emphasizes the importance of being alone, while the melody and Marinaās vocals create an atmosphere of dreamlike melancholy.

I absolutely these lines and it's possibly my favourite part of this album.
For me these lines are about growing up & developing alone.
Because of the isolation she has experienced, she has become hardened and tough. Difficult to read (both black and white), stoic and unfeeling. There has been no-one to comfort her in her lowest moments - she has had to learn to repair herself.
She acknowledges her beauty (diamond, jewel) - but has paid a price to be so successful and beautiful (cut).
"Hard like a rock, cold like a stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when youāre not there"
