Overall Meaning

In "Fear and Loathing," Marina and the Diamonds talks about her experiences of living different lives and trying to find her true self while dealing with bitterness and emptiness. She sings about how she used to perceive the world as a cruel place where everyone is trying to take advantage of you. However, she has come to realize that not everyone is like that, and some people genuinely want to get to know you. Marina takes a stand against living in fear and loathing, instead opting to float freely and touch the edge of greatness.

The chorus of the song talks about Marina's desire to embrace positivity and eschew negativity. She doesn't want to live with the constant stress and anxiety that come with fear and loathing but wants to be light and weightless, floating effortlessly above it all. This song is the most important to me, because it helped me in so many ways when I came out and said to my family that I was (and am lol) gay. They really bullied me, my dad (who is a christian pastor) said he preferred to see me dead to see me gay, that I destroyed the whole family.
And one day, I listened this song, and when I heard:

Okay, so my friend and I are hardcore Diamonds, and I came up with this theory from the videos and lyrics that he added on to and I'll try to explain it as best as I can!

Part 1: Fear and Loathing is Electra getting rid of who she once was. Perhaps it was after a breakup or something? This is not the first time, either. (been many people different times).

Part 2: Radioactive is Electra meeting a new man who she feels like she's on top of the world with. Together, they are toxic and destructive (when you're around me, I'm radioactive) but again, she feels amazing with him. Also, she tries blonde. Perhaps her boyfriend enjoys it.

Part 3: The Archetypes. Electra actually dyes her hair blonde and actually becomes Electra Heart, and is showing the world who she has become. Also, she is revealing that she and the man are now married (housewife).

Part 4: Primadonna. Electra is sure of who she is now, and she gets into a whole "I don't need anyone but myself" place. She feels like the queen of the world.

Part 5: SU-BARBIE-A, Electra's husband doesn't appreciate her telling him he's unneeded, and so they begin to argue constantly, as evidenced by the arguing in the background.

Part 6: Power and Control. Electra's marriage is beginning to fall apart, and they both begin cheating on each other. It becomes a literal power play for both of them.

Part 7: How To Be a Heartbreaker, Electra is now divorced from her husband and is now fooling around with several new men. Also, she removed the blonde from her hair, going back to her natural dark hair.

Part 8: E.V.O.L, Electra begins to realise that she is a little heartbroken and "fucked up" after divorcing her husband. The fun with new boys has run dry.

Part 9: State of Dreaming, Electra realises that she ruined her own life by being narcissistic and unappreciative. She realises that she's been "living in a make-believe land" where she didn't need anyone but herself.

Part 10: Lies. Electra gets her husband back. Sort of. He doesn't love her anymore, and she's completely heartbroken. Their relationship now is purely sexual, and she knows it will never be mended.

Part 11: Electra Heart. Electra's life has fizzed out, and after ruining her marriage and losing her husband and all the happiness she ever had, Electra kills herself.

Also: Perhaps her husband had a girlfriend or wife when he and Electra first met in Radioactive, and thats where "Homewrecker" comes in.

Part 1: Electra is finally accepting the fact she is different and/or part of Marina (Got different people inside my head)

Part 2: Electra takes over and try's to become her own person by falling in love with a guy just as reckless as her and realizing she is bad for him. (Love is all that I fear)

Part 3: Electra decided that she must become a mix of the archetypes of women to find identity (Through others we become ourselves)

Part 4: Electra starts her journey of as the archetypes and becomes a woman who wants it all especially love (I got you wrapped around my finger babe, you can count on me to misbehave)

Part 5: Electra gets taken advantage of and made fun of for life styles so she becomes a simple housewife with no emotions or feelings Uses Barbie as a reflection of this because Barbie is everything anyone wants her to be

Part 6: Electra has moved on from the guy yet is still dating him for everything he's got. The man has also moved on but Electra wants to break-up

Part 7: Electra dumps the guy and moves on to her old life and becomes world famous Heartbreaker that everyone watches out for even though she secretly wants them all to see her as more than that (You got to be the first to run

Part 8: Electra is moving out of her old life and going to move on to more serious love looking for an actual love instead of fake love like she's used to (Love is Evol)

Part 9: Electra starts to lose her grip on the body and she slowly starts to go back to living in a dream (I've been living in a state of dreaming)

Part 10: Electra Heart is finally coming to cope and goes out with one more guy to make herself feel better and maybe stay taking over Marina's body (I don't want to know)

Part 11: Electra Heart comes to terms and gives up killing herself and the rest of the voices with her and only leaving Marina and her body. (Can we go back)

Nice theory. Here's my theory about Electra:

Fear and Loathing: Marina decides to change into someone she's not, so she creates and becomes Electra.

Radioactive: Electra (because she's no longer Marina at this point) falls in love with a guy who's as lecherous as she is.

The Archetypes: Electra has 4 archetypes (housewife, beauty queen, homewrecker & teen idle) and she tries to find which one she wants to be.

Primadonna: Electra decides to be her Beauty Queen archetype (aka a Primadonna)

Su-Barbie-A: Electra looks back at her Beauty Queen archetype and she starts thinking that she's fake like a Barbie doll.

Power and Control: Electra is in a relationship with a guy (I'm 99% sure it's the same one that she fell in love with in Radioactive) and he's in control of their relationship. Electra decides that she wants to be in control. That brings fights between them and at the end, the guy dumps her.

How To Be A Heartbreaker: Electra starts dating multiple guys, to cure her broken heart, hoping she'll find love again but she also thinks "If he can do it to me, I can do it to them"

E.V.O.L: Electra stops trying to find love and convinces herself that love is evil.

The State of Dreaming: Electra sees that she only focuses in her dreams and not on reality. She becomes Marina again.

Lies: Marina tells Electra that she's a lie and that Electra doesn't love Marina as much as Marina thought Electra did when she created her (a lot of people think Lies is a love song, and it is in one way but in another way, it's not at all)

Electra Heart: Marina looks back at her life as Electra and regrets deeply all the things she did. She says that Electra only lives in the dark and is blinded by the light, where Marina wants to lead her and confront her. They go to the forest. The song has the line "Can we go back?". It's unclear whether it's Marina or Electra saying that. If it's Marina, she wants to go back to the start and never create Electra. If it's Electra, she apologises to Marina and wants to make it up to her by going back and undoing everything. But Marina can't and won't go back because she knows that Electra will always be Electra because of the archetypes she has. And then, Marina wipes off the heart from her cheek. That does NOT mean that Electra committed suicide, nor that Marina killed her. The heart was smudged and not completely erased. That means that Marina won the war between her and Electra, defeated her and since because of that Electra was no longer part of Marina, Marina left Electra behind and is ready to move on and start her life again as Marina

Ok, here is MY theory for this album. I have included 2 songs that are not in the “parts” because I feel like they are still essential to the story.

Part 1: Fear and Loathing. This is the song that concludes the album, but is part 1 here. I think this means that at this point, Electra Heart is already dead, which is why Marina does not have the heart on her cheek, and why she already seems to have learnt her lesson (I lived my life in bitterness… There is no crime in being kind… I’m done with trying to have it all.”) It is already the end. She also refers to the archetypes she once was when she was Electra Heart (“I lived a lot of different lives, been different people many times…Got different people inside my head, I wonder which one they like best…”) i.e. the four archetypes, “lived a lot of different lives” implies that she has already lived as these four archetypes, as Electra Heart. We haven’t been introduced to these “people inside her head” yet, but we will be in Part 3.

Part 2: Radioactive: The mood and attitude in this song is completely different to Part 1, and it seems too different to follow on from Part 1. It is much too upbeat compared with the sad tones of Fear and Loathing, and her attitude to love is completely different in this song (“Love is all that I fear”). This implies that this song must have happened in a completely different period of time, so must be a FLASHBACK to Electra Heart’s past, when she was alive (in fact, the WHOLE ALBUM is a flashback to Electra Heart’s past, until her death in Part 11) In this song, we flashback to where it all began, when Marina was becoming Electra Heart, before Electra Heart completely took her over. She wears a blonde wig to symbolise she is ready for a drastic transformation. We see her behaving irrationally, sawing a sofa, misbehaving in a shop, probably to let go of the anger she has. She has developed a negative attitude towards love, probably due to some heartbreak. She tries to convince herself that she was not the victim in the relationship breakdown, that it was HIS loss (“Baby know I’m the one who left you/You’re not the one who left me.”) (“Ready to be let down… Love is all that I fear”… ) she is scared of being hurt in a relationship again.

Part 3: The Archetypes: we are introduced to the archetypes, and Electra Heart is a bit of all of them: Housewife, Homewrecker, Beauty Queen, Idle Teen.

Homewrecker: The first archetype. She is ready for a complete transformation (“You’ll find me in the lonely hearts/Under ‘I’m after a brand new start’”) but not just a blonde wig like in Radioactive. She wants a permanent change, so dyes her hair blonde. Electra Heart is disgusted by the girls around her who feel the need for a serious relationship (“Girls and their curls and their gourmet vomit/Boys and their toys and their six inch rockets”) According to her, love has always been one-sided (“One will breed love, the other hate”) She prides herself on needing no one else and being a cruel player (“Deception, perfection are wonderful traits… And I don’t belong to anyone”). She’s a slayer, and she’s proud of it.

Part 4: Primadonna: for the first time, we see Marina with an eyeliner drawn heart on her cheek, which symbolises that she has fully become Electra Heart. This shows Electra Heart as the “Beauty Queen” archetype, she is obsessed with materialism and adoration, (“All I ever wanted was the world… I wanna be adored…”)

Part 5: Su-Barbie-a: the third archetype, the housewife. We see Marina’s face hidden, showing that Electra Heart has no sense of identity, like a housewife who belongs to her husband. Like most women in the industry, she is objectified and chosen for her looks over her true self (“Having the body that you have, having the face shape that you have, this really does work for you”). She always “belongs” to someone, and she hates it, like a Barbie doll, which is kind of the metaphor used here, the idea that women can be used for their looks (in both the industry and in relationships) and then thrown away (“Look at those great looking dolls! … But what do I do with my old Barbie?” implying that like dolls, they can be discarded when no longer needed and won’t suit the current trendy climate. “Barbie’s new and different!” is implying that the perfect body image is changing with time, and that women with the old “Barbie” body aren’t useful in the industry now so can be thrown away like any other Barbie doll)

Part 6: Power and Control: sick of her passive housewife self, Electra Heart decides to take back control in her relationship. We see her in the video playing mind games with her lover, controlling him, highlighting how there always seems to be a power struggle in relationships (“Women and men we are the same/But love will always be a game”). She wants to be the ruling power in her relationship.

Teen Idle: The last archetype ‘Idle Teen’ , we see Electra Heart’s more vulnerable side. It’s emotionally exhausting for her to constantly put up her ‘tough-girl’ image. She wishes she could be a cold-hearted person deep down (“I wanna be a real fake”) but she can’t, it’s an act and she knows it but she can’t let the mask slip. She hates her adult life, it’s too much effort, and looks back on her teen years, wishing she had lived them to the fullest, doing whatever frivolous things normal teens do, like being “a prom Queen fighting for the title” instead of feeling depressed and “suicidal”.

Part 7: How to Be a Heartbreaker: knowing she can’t afford to break, Electra Heart rebounds and let’s go of her “teen idle” self, and we see her as even more cold-hearted than before (but this is an act, she is using this as a defence mechanism because she is still afraid). She is ashamed that she let her guard down and showed us her true emotions in “Teen Idle”, so decides that it is time for another drastic transformation, so she dyes her hair black again to create an even more menacing identity. We can see that in the video, the ribbon ties in her hair change colour with each different boy she is with, signifying that she changes herself to appeal to each different boy, she is worse than ever before. She tells us her rules on… well… how to be a heartbreaker (duh..?) and on of the rules is to “never wear your heart on your sleeve/unless you wanna taste defeat”. “Wear your heart on your sleeve” is a saying that means to show your true emotions or feelings. Electra Heart is telling us to never show our true emotions if we want to come out on top in a relationship, and at the bridge of the song, she tells us why she has decided to keep her cold-hearted mask on (“We don’t want our hearts to break… so it’s better to be fake”).

Part 8: E.V.O.L: Electra Heart monologues about how love is poisonous, she hates it. She has become so bitter about having any kind of serious relationship (“Every kiss you give me makes me sicker”) But we also here her say (“And I’m your dying beauty Queen”) signalling that Electra Heart is weakening. She is losing control of Marina and is slowly dying.

Part 9: The State of Dreaming: inspired by Marilyn Monroe, a model who tragically took her own life aged 35. Even though she took her own life, the beautiful image of her is strong enough for her to be remembered by. In the same way, people see Electra Heart as this pretty looking character, she is really just as vulnerable as the rest of us. In this song, Electra Heart acknowledges her fake mess and how she plays into a character that she is not deep down (“My life is a play”) and realises that all the material things she thought she desired are fake and meaningless (“I live my life inside a dream”).

Part 10: Lies: The whole point of Electra Heart being a cold-hearted heartbreaker was so she could make boys fall for her, only to throw them away like she once was. It is her way of making herself feel strong. But in this song, Electra Heart’s plan seems to have backfired. She got into a relationship with someone who she hoped to trick like every other boy, but she ended up falling in love with him, but HE was playing HER, and ended up beating her at her own game. Electra Heart seems to have given up here, she is tired of playing the “love game” she has always played: “You’re never gonna love me/So what’s the use?/What’s the point in playing /A game you’re gonna lose?” She has admitted defeat and she can’t help but fall in love with one who played her (“I can’t let you go…”) , even though he doesn’t feel the same (“I don’t wanna admit that we’re not gonna fit/No I’m not the type that you like”)

Part 11: Electra Heart is now completely broken. She is completely broken hearted and has admitted defeat, she has lost control over Marina. She admitted that the idea of materialism and stardom blinded her (“Lights they blind me”).
At the end of the video, she wipes the heart off her cheek, signalling that Electra Heart is dead and only Marina remains. She asks you to “go back to the start, where the holy father made his mark”. She asks you to go back to the beginning of the album, Fear and Loathing, which explains what led her to that place where she learnt her lesson (“There is no crime in being kind/Not everyone is out to screw you over/Maybe they just wanna get to know you”)

WE NOW GO BACK TO PART 1 LIKE ELECTRA HEART TOLD US TO: We know that Electra Heart is already dead in Fear and Loathing now as MARINA has learnt the lessons she should have, and has cut her hair short, unlike the Electra Heart in the Electra Heart video who has quite long hair, and has also no longer has the heart on her cheek. Basically, Fear and Loathing is put at the beginning, but is really the end. Electra Heart is no more.

So true. It's a great pop album. The way she created an angsty character with so many crazy experiences and put into sound form is so genius. The way her perspective evolves throughout the album is so fun to witness, and I just think that this is a well-composed album. It has NOTHING but bops in it. Love this album so much.

I don't really think so, since this is the last song on the album and at the end Electra Heart (the character) kills herself, she's letting go of her life and ending it with pills, this is basically her last thoughts that led her to commit suicide, the "floating" I guess is the feeling she gets from the pills when she gets high from them before she dies

I hate when people say things like "OMG LISTENING TO MARINA MAKES ME DEPRESSED AND I LOVE IT" because people actually do go through depression, as Marina did and I really feel depressed a lot and i feel they're just trying to fit in. And also people who say Marina glamorizes depression, she doesn't, she's singing about her past and if you haven't been through even a bit of a depressed or suicidal feeling don't try to understand it because you won't.

This is an awesome final song to Electra heart. It has a storyline. This song is her realizing that she deserves happiness and the world isn’t truly evil. It leads perfectly into froot, where the first song is happiness, a song about finally wanting to be happy. The whole of froot is about accepting herself and moving on. It’s just so perfect

God I just love this song so much. It means a lot to me. Especially the lines "Not everyone is out to screw you over, maybe they just want to get to know ya" because I have a hard time talking to people and I just get really sort of rude unintentionally when some people try to talk to me but it's only because I get shy and scared but I try to think of this line every time I try to talk to someone new. It’s honestly insane how much how much Marina speaks to me, both her and Melanie I ignored for so long and now are my favorite artists, listening to some Marina songs for the first time it kind of blew my mind how insanely similar the lyrics match to me like numb from family jewels and valley of the dolls. I’m feeling like this song right now INSANELY, also the parts talking about being different people hit hard, I’m trying to stop feeling so bitter about life mostly though and not lose myself in that anger and sadness, not only that but her music makes me feel so at home too and that’s why I love it, like it’s genuinely so comforting compared to so many artists like even if the lyrics aren’t really positive it still makes me feel safe listening to it, she truly inspires me with her journey of music too and seeing how many other people she helped with her music I’m so glad to be a fan of her

Damn God, I love this woman. She doesn't go around shaking her ass. She really has something to say, and her song will make you, I don't know, think. Yeah, THINK. Because she really writes this songs believing in something. Her songs are good examples of what I like to call "intelligent songs" ... Ugh this was the second song by Marina that I listened to.
The first was How to be a Heartbreaker but that was shown to me by some friends and I couldn't base my reactions off it alone.

Then I heard this. The 6 minute version of it, with her grandma singing. And I loved it. It annoys me how this version drops off before the last verse, as it was by far my favorite. I also dislike how quick the fade is when it does end.

This song really is inspirational, my problems are not as bad as anyone else, but I came from a very judge mental family who believed money was the way to buy unconditional love, they thought it would impress me, and they frowned on the fact that I chose a different more humbler path in life. This was and still is my favorite song from Electra Heart no doubt about it, I wasn't in the best state mentally and I spent a lot time alone. Whenever I would listen to this it would briefly make everything ok and gave me the strength and hope that I would get better and stop blaming myself for not being the best me I can be. I can't say that I'm 100% now,but I no longer live my life in fear and I am way more accepting than I have ever been and I am the last person to judge.

God this video is even more heartbreaking when you watch it as the last part. idk if it's right but i watched them backwards and it makes sense to me this way.... Electra Heart is the intro, Electra reflecting on everything that has happened to her, then Lies is her getting her heart broken which leads to her becoming more and more detached, the "heartbreaker" until she gets into another relationship (Power and Control).

Wow I relate to this song so much and I’ve seen a lot of other people who were abused as a kid (of any age not just under 13) who relate to this song as well. I often lash out at people when I’m assuming they’re trying to attack me when they aren’t and I regret it and I’ve lost a lot of friends from that. My therapist even said I’m pretty much I’m on hyper (?) alert all the time because of my trauma and I’m constantly watching my back and making sure no one’s out to get me or making fun of me, etc because I’m scared of people, genuinely. Even though I try to act like the tough and mean person. (I don’t look the part though) I have so many people shame me for this and tell me I haven’t experienced trauma when we’re all different
It means a lot to have so many songs by Marina that I can relate to on such a deep level
