Happy
Marina and the daimonds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Couldn't relax, couldn't sit back
And let the sunlight in my lap
I sang a hymn to bring me peace
And then it came, a melody

It felt so sweet, it felt so strong
It made me feel like I belonged
And all the sadness inside me
Melted away like I was free

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy

Don't go out much at all
I've never been the type to call
I realize to be happy
Maybe I need a little company

So now you know, you know it all
That I've been des-desperately alone
I haven't found the one for me
But I believe in divinity

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy

I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy

From the concrete to the coast
I was looking for a Holy Ghost
Like the land joining the sea
Happiness, it followed me

I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me

And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy, happy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Marina and the Diamonds's song Happy reflect the journey and discovery of personal happiness. The song begins with Marina's admission that she was unable to relax and allow happiness into her life. However, she eventually found solace in singing a hymn which led to the creation of a melody, making her feel a sense of belonging and causing all the sadness within her to melt away as if freedom had been achieved.

Marina's lyrics convey the idea that finding happiness is often linked to self-discovery, which is echoed in the chorus, where she sings about finding what she had been looking for in herself, leading to a life worth living for someone else. Marina further acknowledges that although she doesn't go out much at all, having a company may be the key to happiness. Finally, she states that she has found a way to be happy, believing in the possibility of something greater and feeling like she's being watched over.

Overall, the lyrics reinforce the concept that finding happiness is a personal journey that requires introspection and a willingness to explore oneself. The song's hook, "Happy, Happy" is used repeatedly throughout the song, making it catchy and easy to sing along to.

i played this today as i set fire to an old su*cide note i'd written. I watched the fire eat away at the paper and i knew for a fact that all the sadness inside me HAD melted away. :) I used to listen to this in tears, yearning for a day when I could be happy, yet struggling to believe it would come. But it did. I'm so happy, so fully content and grateful for everything in my life. It's been a journey - one of therapy, medication, spirituality and reconnecting with people, but I made it. if you're struggling right now, i need you to know that you'll make it too. You absolutely can be happy, as hard as it may be to believe right now. hang in there, loves. you're doing great <3

I'm never gonna have that day. Everytime I feel better something bad happens or I just mess it up for myself and cause myself to be sad. I've tried 3 different meds and I hated them and I hate therapy.

@jiyanarula3047

@@alexis_daydream333 everyone responds differently to different forms of treatment! i’ve had to switch therapists several times for numerous reasons, and still have days where i feel like medication isn’t doing anything for me. as much as it sucks, there really is no once and for all cure. :( some days are harder than others, and i still feel like crap sometimes but what changed is i now know i am capable of happiness. life is a whole rollercoaster (cliché, i know,,,) but it’s worth it. i just tell myself that being human is feeling both ends of the emotional spectrum :’) happiness isn’t a forever cure, but i promise you can still be content. best of luck in your journey bby i believe in you <3
