Hijo De La Luna
Mario Frangoulis Lyrics

Cuenta una leyenda
Que una hembra gitana
Conjuró a la luna hasta el amanecer
Llorando pedía
Al llegar el día
Desposar un calé
Desde el cielo habló la luna llena
Pero a cambio quiero
El hijo primero
Que le engendres a él
Que quien su hijo inmola
Para no estar sola
Poco le iba a querer
Luna quieres ser madre
Y no encuentras querer
Que te haga mujer
Dime luna de plata
Que pretendes hacer
Con un niño de piel, Ah, ah
Hijo de la luna
De padre canela nació un niño
Blanco como el lomo de un armiño
Con los ojos grises
En vez de aceituna
Niño albino de luna
Maldita su estampa
Este hijo es de un payo
Y yo no me lo callo
Luna quieres ser madre
Y no encuentras querer
Que te haga mujer
Dime luna de plata
Que pretendes hacer
Con un niño de piel, Ah, ah
Hijo de la luna
Gitano al creerse deshonrado
Se fue a su mujer cuchillo en mano
De quién es el hijo?
Me has engañado fijo
Y de muerte la hirió
Luego se hizo al monte
Con el niño en brazos
Y allí le abandonó
Luna quieres ser madre
Y no encuentras querer
Que te haga mujer
Dime luna de plata
Que pretendes hacer
Con un niño de piel, Ah, ah
Hijo de la luna
Y las noches que haya luna llena
Será porque el niño esté de buenas
Y si el niño llora
Menguará la luna
Para hacerle una cuna
Y si el niño llora
Menguará la luna
Para hacerle una cuna
The song Hijo De La Luna by Mario Frangoulis tells the story of a legend about a gypsy woman who appealed to the moon to help her marry a gypsy man. The moon granted her wish, but asked for their firstborn child in return. The child was born white as snow, with gray eyes instead of olive ones, as the mother had been with a non-gypsy man. The father, feeling dishonored, attacked his wife with a knife and then abandoned the child in the woods.
The lyrics convey strong emotions of love, desperation, and sacrifice. The gypsy woman was willing to give up her firstborn child to be with the man she loved, and the moon was willing to have a child to call her own. But the child was ultimately caught in the crossfire of the couple's cultural differences and prejudice. The moon, however, continued to watch over the child, making sure he had a safe place to sleep and would be happy under her light.
The song Hijo De La Luna has become a popular classic in Latin American and Spanish-speaking countries, and has been covered by several artists in different languages. It's a beautiful and tragic story that speaks to the universal themes of love, sacrifice, and cultural clashes.

Actually Mario Frangoulis is Greek, but he sings equally perfectly in Italian, French, English and Spanish! A truly multi-talented tenor!

I think this is the most moving song I have ever heard. Had goose bumps more than 4 times throughout the song. Who thought of such a thing?

Try the original version by Mecano, it's wonderful. Nacho Cano wrote this song and Ana Torroja sang it in a very special way.
Alicia Velasquez
Undoubtedly a marvelous tale made song. I'd say that Nacho Cano, the author, created It picking a treasure from the very heart of gipsy poetry where the Moon has an important place.
