ήταν άδειο το κεμέρι, μουχλιασμένο το νερό
The well was empty, the water was moldy

στη Μοσσούλη, τη Βασσόρα, στην παλιά τη χουρμαδιά
In Mosul, Basra, and the old date palms

πικραμένα κλαίνε τώρα της ερήμου τα παιδιά.
The children of the desert cry bitterly now.

Κι ένας νέος από σόι και γενιά βασιλική
And a young man from a royal lineage

αγροικάει το μοιρολόι και τραβάει κατά εκεί.
Sings the lament and heads in that direction.

τον κοιτάν οι Βεδουίνοι με ματιά λυπητερή
The Bedouins look at him with a mournful gaze

κι όρκο στον Αλλάχ τους δίνει, πως θ' αλλάξουν οι καιροί.
And he swears to Allah that times will change.

Σαν ακούσαν οι αρχόντοι του παιδιού την αφοβιά
When the prince's courage was heard by the rulers

ξεκινάν με λύκου δόντι και με λιονταριού προβιά
They set out with wolf's teeth and lion's mane

απ' τον Τίγρη στον Ευφράτη, απ' τη γη στον ουρανό
From the Tigris to the Euphrates, from the earth to the sky

κυνηγάν τον αποστάτη να τον πιάσουν ζωντανό.
They chase the apostate to catch him alive.

Πέφτουν πάνω του τα στίφη, σαν ακράτητα σκυλιά
They fall upon him like unleashed dogs

και τον πάνε στο χαλίφη να του βάλει την θηλιά.
And they take him to the Caliph to put the noose around his neck.

μαύρο μέλι μαύρο γάλα ήπιε εκείνο το πρωί
He drank black honey and black milk that morning

πριν αφήσει στην κρεμάλα τη στερνή του την πνοή.
Before he gave his last breath on the gallows.

Με δύο γέρικες καμήλες μ' ένα κόκκινο φαρί
With two old camels and a red tent

στου παράδεισου τις πύλες ο προφήτης καρτερεί.
The prophet awaits at the gates of paradise.

πάνε τώρα χέρι χέρι κι είναι γύρω συννεφιά
They go hand in hand now, surrounded by clouds

μα της Δαμασκού τ' αστέρι τους κρατούσε συντροφιά.
But the star of Damascus kept them company.

Σ' ένα μήνα σ' ένα χρόνο βλέπουν μπρος τους τον Αλλάχ
In a month, in a year, they see ahead of them Allah

που από τον ψηλό του θρόνο λέει στον άμυαλο Σεβάχ:
Who speaks to the foolish Sevach from his lofty throne:

νικημένο μου ξεφτέρι δεν αλλάζουν οι καιροί,
My defeated scoundrel, times do not change,

με φωτιά και με μαχαίρι πάντα ο κόσμος προχωρεί.
With fire and with sword, the world always moves forward.

Καληνύχτα Κεμάλ, αυτός ο κόσμος δε θα αλλάξει ποτέ
Goodnight Kemal, this world will never change
