Begin the Beguine
Mario Lanza Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender,
It brings back a night of tropical splendor,
It brings back a memory evergreen.

I'm with you once more under the stars,
And down by the shore an orchestra's playing
And even the palms seem to be swaying
When they begin the beguine.

To live it again is past all endeavor,
Except when that tune clutches my heart,
And there we are, swearing to love forever,
And promising never, never to part.

What moments divine, what rapture serene,
Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted,
And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted,
I know but too well what they mean;

So don't let them begin the beguine
Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember;
Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
When they begin the beguine.

Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, make them play
Till the stars that were there before return above you,
Till you whisper to me once more,
"Darling, I love you!"

And we suddenly know, what heaven we're in,
When they begin the beguine

Overall Meaning

The song "Begin the Beguine" by Mario Lanza is about the power of music to evoke past memories of love and happiness. When the beguine music begins to play, the singer is transported back to a night of tropical splendor and is reunited with a lost love once more. The music is described as bringing back the tender sound of music and swaying the palm trees. While reminiscing, the singer acknowledges that the moment was divine but unfortunately short-lived as clouds came along and dispersed their joys. The singer then pleads with the musicians not to play the beguine anymore so that the memory can remain a pleasant ember rather than a painful reminder of a lost love. However, the singer ultimately surrenders to the power of the music and pleads with the orchestra to play the beguine once more so that they may relive their past love and be reunited in heaven.

The song is a tribute to the beguine, a popular dance in the Caribbean islands in the early 20th century. The lyrics were written by Cole Porter, and the music was composed by Artie Shaw, a renowned jazz clarinetist. Porter intended for the song to be a tribute to the beguine dance, and Shaw added his own touch of jazz to the melody. The song was first performed in 1935 and became an instant hit.

Not many take note of this but Mario Lanza is a VERY EXCELLENT POP SINGER. He can actually croon like Perry Como or Bing Crosby on some of the passages in this song. Yes he is a TRUE CROSSOVER ARTIST. The very first may I add!

Ирина Малафеева

Бессмертное исполнение бессмертного произведения. Спасибо, Марио,за эту красоту!

Rafael Poyatos Bojollo

Perhaps, united, the best song of Lanza and the best version of Begin...It's also remarkable the part of the orchestra, by Ray Sinatra. A master piece, so good as a famous aria.

Jose Cantero

Gran versión del irrepetible y único M.Lanza, compararlo con otros cantantes de estilos y versiones diferentes por ejemplo (J.Negrete dixit) para mí es como un mal chiste.

Mario Lanza could sing any song with passion from a simple show tune to magnificent opera with passion and soul. There will never be anyone else like him.
