Delirious
Mario Spinetti Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Such a funny, funny way

Please don't please me
Officer,
You haven't the heart
I say,

"It's a sunny, sunny day"
You say I'm delirious
Lock me away

Until I say
We'll do it your way
And,
"We can work it out,"
"Make it stay"
Do it your way

But there best be no mistakin'
I'll be makin' you say,

"Hey, it's a funny, funny way"
You say I'm delirious
Lock me away

I believe
(As the days keep getting colder)

Lord,
I believe
That thy kingdom may come

Oh Lord,
I believe
(As I rest upon your shoulder)

That my heart won't break 'til I'm home
Oh my heart won't break 'til I'm home
No my heart won't break 'til I'm home
With you

Amen
Such a funny, funny, way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mario Spinetti's song Delirious suggest a situation where the singer is being accused by an unknown officer of being delirious even though he insists he is fine, stating that it's a sunny day outside. Despite his plea, the officer locks him up until he agrees to do things "his way" and promises to work things out so that "it stays" but adds that he'd better not be mistaken because he will make the officer say "it's a funny, funny way" instead. The lyrics take a spiritual turn when the singer says he believes that the Lord's kingdom will come and he rests upon the Lord's shoulder. In the end, he trusts that his heart will not break till he is home with him.

Looking at the lyrics of Delirious, it can be interpreted that the singer may be dealing with a mental health issue or maybe under the influence of drugs that caused the officer to be suspicious. However, the singer seems to have faith in God and trusts that he will be okay. The song could also be seen as an allegory for life's struggles, and how one can come out of them with the help of faith.
