After You've Gone
Marion Harris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now won't you listen honey, while I say,
How could you tell me that you're goin' away?
Don't say that we must part,
Don't break your baby's heart

You know I've loved you for these many years
Love you night and day,
Oh honey baby, can't you see my tears?
Listen while I say

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had?

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Oh babe think think what are you doing
You know my love for you will drive me to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You feel blue you feel sad
And you'll miss the only pal you ever had

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Oh babe think think what are you doing
You know my love for you will drive me to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away

I said away

Overall Meaning

The song "After You've Gone" by Marion Harris is a classic jazz and blues song that was first released in 1918. The song is sung from the perspective of a heartbroken lover who is pleading with their partner not to leave them. The lyrics are emotional and deeply personal, with the singer expressing their love and fear of losing their partner. The song is an excellent example of the blues and jazz music genres, with a catchy melody and slow, mournful lyrics.

The lyrics of the song can be interpreted as an illustration of the pain and emotions experienced by those who have been abandoned by somebody they love. The opening lines "Now won't you listen honey, while I say, How could you tell me that you're goin' away?" express the singer's confusion and shock at being left behind. They go on to pleadingly ask their partner not to break their heart and to reconsider their decision.

The song's refrain, "After you've gone and left me cryin', after you've gone, there's no denyin'," speaks to the sense of abandonment and loss that the singer feels after their partner leaves. The remaining lyrics depict the regret and despair that the singer predicts their partner will feel following their departure. The song can be seen as a somber warning to those who are leaving behind somebody they love, urging them to consider the emotional consequences of their actions.

People would still listen.

Good music transcends time. There are people who still listen to classical music from obscure composers who have been dead for two hundred years so I’m sure there still will be people listening to this in 100 years time.

@cha5

I remember reading that a recording of this song (as sung by Bessie Smith) was launched to into space on one of the Voyager probes, I do wonder if it will ever be discovered and possibly played by anyone or anything out there that might could decipher 78 Record technology?
