Selling DVDs
Os pés no chão do mundo
When I walk and the music's in me
Where are you?
I am here
Jogging in São Paulo
On my headphones
Quem será
New York City is on my mobile
Great desire, kitchen fire
Where are you
Statue of Liberty?
In Marisa Monte's song "Statue of Liberty", the lyrics portray a sense of displacement and longing for connection. The opening lines mention "Baianas" selling DVDs on Broadway, which references Brazilian women (from Bahia) trying to make a living in a different culture. The line "Os pés no chão do mundo" translates to "Feet on the ground of the world," indicating the struggle of finding stability and purpose while navigating through foreign surroundings.
The chorus of the song expresses the question, "Where are you, Statue of Liberty?" This can be seen as a metaphor for searching for a sense of belonging in a new place. The mention of jogging in São Paulo and having New York City on the mobile reveals the contrast between the singer's physical location and their desire to connect with someone or something beyond their immediate surroundings. There is a yearning for the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing freedom, acceptance, and the hopes of finding solace in a foreign land.
The combination of these lyrics conveys a sentiment of feeling lost, disconnected, and yearning for a sense of unity and understanding. Through these poetic lines, Marisa Monte captures the universal human experience of searching for an emotional connection in unfamiliar environments.
