Inició su carrera en 1960, a los 12 años, en la película "Un rayo de luz", con un enorme éxito, no sólo en España sino a nivel internacional incluso en Japón. De ahí en adelante filmó alrededor de 15 películas, la mayoría como protagonista, con títulos como: Tómbola, Ha llegado un Angel, La Nueva Cenicienta, Sólos los dos, Carola de día - Carola de Noche y ya en su etapa adulta: La chica del Molino Rojo, La Corrupción de Chris Miller, Los días del pasado y la Miniserie para Televisión Española "Proceso a Mariana Pineda".
Ha grabado alrededor de 500 canciones, de los autores más reconocidos de España, como Augusto Algueró, Manuel Alejandro y Luis Eduardo Auté. Al inicio de su carrera cantaba en una diversidad de géneros, sobretodo el flamenco, pero al crecer se inclinó hacia el género pop, cosechando éxitos en España y América. Grandes éxitos a lo largo de su carrera como Me Conformo, Corazón Contento, Háblame del mar marinero y Ayúdame a pasar la noche la han hecho famosa e inolvidable en el panorama de la música española, y también a nivel internacional con incontables seguidores en América y Japón.
En la actualidad Pepa (o Marisol) vive en Málaga, su ciudad natal, está felizmente casada, tiene 3 hijas de su anterior matrimonio con el fallecido bailarín y actor español Antonio Gades: María Esteve (también actriz), Tamara y Celia (también cantante, acaba de lanzar al mercado su primer CD). Ha sido objeto de reconocimientos tan importantes como: Malagueña del año 2000, debido también a su amplia labor social en su ciudad.
