Nadler studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she began her performing career after writing songs for many years.
The foundation of her sound is her haunting mezzo-soprano, and a delicate 6-string acoustic guitar, often accompanied by a variety of instruments, including electric guitar, theremin, and piano. Nadler writes strange, yet classic, melancholy songs. Her voice is often bathed in a wash of reverb and space echo and creates a ghostly, atmospheric feeling to the music.
She has American Gothic leanings; her songs often take place in an imagined, idealistic time with a cast of characters of her own creation.

The Wrecking Ball Company
Marissa Nadler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Cement around the heart.
A company of mad machines would take the walls,
Crumble them apart
Ohh the dance? will let you batter? barricades
I've tried to keep you
Banned from the blockades
Wait,
Flirty with the failed and fleeting fusion
Body after body to entice.
Till you came into my sad seclusion
I let you waste my vice and be your wife
Ohh the dance? will let you batter? barricades
I've tried to keep you
Banned from the blockades
Wait,
One more day.
In Marissa Nadler's song The Wrecking Ball Company, the singer reflects on a complicated and seemingly destructive relationship. The lyrics suggest that the singer has built up emotional barriers around herself ("cement around the heart"), and that her partner has been trying to break through these walls using all sorts of means ("a company of mad machines," "dancing to batter barricades"). The singer acknowledges that she has resisted this process, trying to keep her partner out of her "blockades," but there is some suggestion that she is starting to give in ("flirty with the failed and fleeting fusion," "I let you waste my vice and be your wife").
