After these two bands broke up, singer/guitarist Davey von Bohlen, drummer Dan Didier (of The Promise Ring) and bassist Eric Axelson (of The Dismemberment Plan) hooked up and started a band called In English. The group quickly signed a deal with the record label,ANTI-, and hired J. Robbins to produce their record. Robbins had previously produced records for both The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan. After delivering the record to ANTI-, the label heads decided to pass on the record. The band changed their name to Maritime and signed with DeSoto Records. The band went on tour and self-released an EP called Adios on their own label, Foreign Leisure. On April 1, 2004 the band released their debut full-length album, Glass Floor on Desoto Records.
On February 6th, 2006, Eric Axelson announced he was leaving the band. He was replaced on bass guitar by Justin Klug.
Their second album, We, the Vehicles, was released April 18th, 2006 to wide critical acclaim along with a third, Heresy and the Hotel Choir in October 2007 on Flameshovel Records.
In 2011 Maritime returned with the album Human Hearts, featuring the single "It's Casual."
Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones was released in 2015.

Maritime Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Stations of transparent lives
Infinity in old blue jeans I'd live a lie if it agreed
So in the morning, I am not alone
The balladeers all hit their last note
The crowd is headed to the door
Adios, that's how it goes a hotel guest a part time ghost
This morning I was not alone
When the drinks are deep and the winters long
But the company still keeps
Lets hit the road and leave our names at home
You know that I lose everything I own
We're always coming into something new
You know I lose everything I do
Lets hit the road and leave our names at home
The opening lines of the first verse in Maritime's song "Adios" describes the transient nature of life as the cars follow the path of the setting sun, symbolizing the end of a day or chapter in one's life, with stations (or checkpoints) marking significant moments that shape one's character. The metaphorical use of old blue jeans represents nostalgia, which can be comforting or deceptive depending on one's perspective. The singer then ponders the notion of living a lie if it meant conforming to societal expectations. It's a thought-provoking line that entices listeners to contemplate the concept of authenticity and whether it's worth sacrificing for acceptance.
The pre-chorus shows the singer's realization that even though they may feel isolated, they are not entirely alone. The musicians during a concert or musical show hitting their last note implies that they are concluding something significant. The crowd heading for the door represents the inevitability of change and the need to move on. The singer says goodbye or Adios, acknowledging that's how it goes, further emphasizing the notion of life's fleeting nature. A hotel guest and part-time ghost conveys the sense of impermanence, implying that the individuals they meet during their journey will fade away with time. However, the last line of the pre-chorus reiterates that the singer is not entirely alone, and there's always a chance for a new beginning.
The chorus's opening lines stress the idea of starting anew, forging identity or making a mark undiscovered by leaving old habits behind. However, the last two lines, "You know that I lose everything I own / We're always coming into something new / You know I lose everything I do / Lets hit the road and leave our names at home," juxtaposes a sense of optimism with a tinge of cynicism. The singer acknowledges their tendency to lose things or make mistakes despite starting afresh, but that doesn't stop them from trying again. The concluding lines' choice to leave names at home could suggest anonymity, the freedom to act without being judged, or the idea of leaving a legacy behind as a name alone can't always tell the story.
