After these two bands broke up, singer/guitarist Davey von Bohlen, drummer Dan Didier (of The Promise Ring) and bassist Eric Axelson (of The Dismemberment Plan) hooked up and started a band called In English. The group quickly signed a deal with the record label,ANTI-, and hired J. Robbins to produce their record. Robbins had previously produced records for both The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan. After delivering the record to ANTI-, the label heads decided to pass on the record. The band changed their name to Maritime and signed with DeSoto Records. The band went on tour and self-released an EP called Adios on their own label, Foreign Leisure. On April 1, 2004 the band released their debut full-length album, Glass Floor on Desoto Records.
On February 6th, 2006, Eric Axelson announced he was leaving the band. He was replaced on bass guitar by Justin Klug.
Their second album, We, the Vehicles, was released April 18th, 2006 to wide critical acclaim along with a third, Heresy and the Hotel Choir in October 2007 on Flameshovel Records.
In 2011 Maritime returned with the album Human Hearts, featuring the single "It's Casual."
Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones was released in 2015.

I'm Not Afraid
Maritime Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My car's collecting leaves
I love all of my things, they've been patient with me. I thought that I might start to smoke just so I'd have somewhere to put my hands when time just stands and stares. we're souvenirs we buried the bars they bend in the wind, we laugh and return we patron the saint I go on and go off in english enough, no more we cry under our breath. I though that I might start to smoke just so I have somewhere to put my hands when time unplans. affairs I couldn't care. I'n not afraid to love someone for all my life 'till it comes undone, when we catch our deaths and the continets come, we keep speaking of course it's so good to know that I'm not afraid I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid
The opening line of this song, "I am walking again, counting my steps so I don't lose my way back home again," sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is reflecting on their life and trying to find their way home again, both physically and emotionally. They are taking each step carefully, not wanting to lose their way again.
The mention of the singer's car collecting leaves is a metaphor for the passing of time and the abandonment of things. The car is a symbol of freedom, but it is also a material possession that can be left behind. The singer loves all of their things, but they've also realized that they need to be patient with them. They've come to an understanding that things can't take priority over people.
The mention of smoking is an interesting twist on the idea of coping mechanisms. The singer is considering taking up smoking not because they want to smoke, but because they need something to do with their hands when time stands still. The idea of burying bars, patronizing saints, and crying under their breath all paint a picture of someone who is lost and searching for meaning. The repeated refrain of "I'm not afraid" serves as an affirmation that the singer is strong and will find their way back home.
