After these two bands broke up, singer/guitarist Davey von Bohlen, drummer Dan Didier (of The Promise Ring) and bassist Eric Axelson (of The Dismemberment Plan) hooked up and started a band called In English. The group quickly signed a deal with the record label,ANTI-, and hired J. Robbins to produce their record. Robbins had previously produced records for both The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan. After delivering the record to ANTI-, the label heads decided to pass on the record. The band changed their name to Maritime and signed with DeSoto Records. The band went on tour and self-released an EP called Adios on their own label, Foreign Leisure. On April 1, 2004 the band released their debut full-length album, Glass Floor on Desoto Records.
On February 6th, 2006, Eric Axelson announced he was leaving the band. He was replaced on bass guitar by Justin Klug.
Their second album, We, the Vehicles, was released April 18th, 2006 to wide critical acclaim along with a third, Heresy and the Hotel Choir in October 2007 on Flameshovel Records.
In 2011 Maritime returned with the album Human Hearts, featuring the single "It's Casual."
Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones was released in 2015.

If All My Days Go By
Maritime Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hide your shoulders
From all the foolish shapes
That might give you away
We are guarded,
By all unclarity.
And the urgency is beating me.
There's a moment in the evening where we fortify.
All my days go wondering by,
When your near as well there's heaven in another life.
All the music without tunes,
Without meaning,
Devil horns and angel wings.
Now the girl on the street,
Keeps repeating,
The earth's under stone rings,
And newspaper clippings,
They described the night,
Cried for mercy,
Apostrophes of life,
They've taken enough,
Unresisted,
And we're calling out their bluff,
Take me as i show you how.
Now all my days go wondering by,
There's a moment in the evening where we fortify.
All my days go wondering by,
When your near you know there's heaven in another life.
I stay out of the light,
Hide my shoulders,
And all my foolish shapes,
That might give me away,
I am guarded,
From all unclarity,
And the urgency is breathing in me now
In Maritime's song "If All My Days Go By," the lyrics suggest a sense of guardedness and apprehension in the face of an uncertain and confusing world. The first verse begins with the advice to hide one's shoulders to avoid giving oneself away to the "foolish shapes" that surround us. The singer reflects on the pervasive sense of "unclarity" that guards us all and the urgency that beats within them. The second and third stanzas describe a world without meaning, where even music lacks its usual power, and newspaper clippings describe scenes of chaos and tragedy.
Amidst all this confusion and chaos, however, the song offers a glimmer of hope. The chorus suggests that, despite everything, there are moments in life where we can "fortify" ourselves against the uncertainty of the world. When we are near those we love, there is "heaven in another life" - a sense that even if this world is confusing and uncertain, there are moments of grace and transcendence to be found.
