His breakthrough in music came with the album "Mit Pfefferminz bin ich dein Prinz" ("With peppermint, I'm your prince") in 1978.
Müller-Westernhagen's music is shaped through his concise voice and shouting passages. His texts are very direct and provoking, e.g. "Dicke" ("Fat people"), but also social critical texts like "Freiheit" (freedom) are included in his emotional repertoire.
Why Don't You Say Your Name

Why don't you say your name
Why don't you say your name
Hat es zweck zu fliehen
Mit meinen blut'gen Füßen
Würde ich doch überall erkannt
Werd' lieber niederknie'n
Das Schwert in meinen Händen
Und wie ein Samurai
Auf wiederseh'n
Hat der Wahnsinn mich endlich eingeholt
Why don't you say your name
The lyrics of Marius Müller-Westernhagen's song "Why Don't You Say Your Name" depict the singer, possibly under the influence of drugs, waking up in a state of confusion and disorientation. He is lying in his own vomit, with his underwear hanging on his knees, and holding a knife. The bathroom shower is on, and he hears a woman's voice, but he doesn't know who she is. The singer is clearly experiencing some sort of mental breakdown, as he questions whether he has finally succumbed to madness. Throughout the song, he rhetorically asks the other characters to identify themselves, as if they hold the keys to his sanity.
As the song progresses, the singer's hallucinations intensify, as he sees a man who looks like a policeman shouting and a girl with large breasts smiling at him as if nothing has happened. The singer ponders whether it is God's will that he is experiencing these delusions, and contemplates whether he should try to escape or surrender. Finally, he decides to kneel down with his sword in hand, like a samurai, bidding farewell.
