For the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she collaborated with Sting for the duet "A Thousand Years", released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics Unity, where fado is sung in both English and Portuguese.
Mariza is considered by many as a more contemporary follower of Amalia Rodrigues, and has covered a number of her songs.
In 2003 she became the "Winner in the Europe category" of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Fado Português De Nós
Mariza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fez-se à vida pelo mundo
Foi p'lo sonho vagabundo
Foi pela terra abraçado
Bem querido ou mal amado
O Fado
Viveu de ser Português
Por ser um fado é canção
Por ser futuro é passado
Mal querido ou bem amado
O Fado
Cada vez mais Português
Anda nas asas do vento
Ás vezes solta um lamento
E pede p'ra ser achado
Ele é querido, ele é amado
O Fado
The lyrics of Mariza's song "Fado Português De Nós" beautifully capture the essence of the Portuguese soul music that is Fado. The song begins by stating that Fado was born from being Portuguese, and it's a way of life for many Portuguese people. The Fado genre has traveled across the world, but its roots remain in Portugal. The next line explains that Fado came to life through the dreams of travelers who spread its sound throughout the world. Despite its distant origins, Fado remained close to its heartland and hugged the land with genuine emotion.

@bosskecar1 Fado is a traditional song of the portuguese people. An expressive way to sing of emotions and emotional times...so the title of this song... is "Portuguese Fado is ours".... does that help?..
