For the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she collaborated with Sting for the duet "A Thousand Years", released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics Unity, where fado is sung in both English and Portuguese.
Mariza is considered by many as a more contemporary follower of Amalia Rodrigues, and has covered a number of her songs.
In 2003 she became the "Winner in the Europe category" of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Pequenas Verdades
Mariza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Não havia luz para te olhar
Tibe que roubar a lua
Para te poder iluminar
Quando iluminei o teu rosto
Fez-se dia no meu corpo
Enquanto eu te iluminava
São as pequenas verdades
As que guiam o meu caminho
Verdades brancas
Como a manhã
Que abre a janela do nosso destino
Como o teu olhar
Quando tu me olhas
Como a tua lembrança
Depois de partires
É verdade que a sombra do ar me queima
As que guiam o meu caminho
Verdades brancas
Como a manhã
Que abre a janela do nosso destino
Como o teu olhar
Quando tu me olhas
Como a tua lembrança
Depois de partires
É verdade que a sombra do ar me queima
The lyrics of Mariza's song Pequenas Verdades (Small Truths) open with the singer describing her desert of waters – a metaphorical representation of her life – where there was no light to see her loved one. She had to steal the moon to illuminate her beloved. When she finally illuminated his face, it felt like daybreak in her body, and her soul was reborn in that moment. It is the small truths that guide her path, like white truths that come with the morning, opening the window of destiny.
Throughout the song, Mariza keeps returning to the metaphor of small truths, which lead to significant changes. They are like the memories that keep one going despite the pain of losing someone. The singer acknowledges that missing someone deeply is true and admits that without that person, life is unbearable. The lyrics take a romantic turn as she expresses the mysteriousness of love and how it can be real or just a fleeting dream.
Pequenas Verdades is a song of self-discovery, acceptance, loss, and hope. It portrays a journey of finding the small truths that guide one's life and the impact of love on shaping one's destiny. The use of poetic metaphors, rich imagery, and emotive language results in a song that resonates with listeners at an emotional level.

Quand tu me regardes
