For the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she collaborated with Sting for the duet "A Thousand Years", released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics Unity, where fado is sung in both English and Portuguese.
Mariza is considered by many as a more contemporary follower of Amalia Rodrigues, and has covered a number of her songs.
In 2003 she became the "Winner in the Europe category" of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Por Ti!
Mariza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
E canto só para ti
Derramo a voz e o pranto
Que te canta como eu canto
É por ti e só por ti
Derramo a voz e o pranto
Que te canta como eu canto
É por ti e só por ti
Dou à guitarra e ao xaile
Caminhos de Santiago
Cega-me o pó neste vale
Que o vento só por meu mal
Acende fogos que apago
Cega-me o pó neste vale
Que o vento só por meu mal
Acende fogos que apago
Há tanta melodia, tanta
Que o vento traz nos sentidos
Sinfonias que me encantam
Parece às vezes que cantam
Fados de amores proibidos
Sinfonias que me encantam
Parece às vezes que cantam
Fados de amores proibidos
Eu trago a estrada da vida
Guardada na minha mão
Que pensa perder-se na ida
Com medo de não ter partida
Dentro do meu coração
Que pensa perder-se na ida
Com medo de não ter partida
Dentro do meu coração
The song "Por Ti!" by Mariza is a heartfelt declaration of love and a tribute to a special someone. The lyrics describe the singer closing her eyes and singing only for this person, pouring out her voice and tears to show how much she cares. The guitar and shawl, often associated with Portuguese traditional music, accompany her on this journey, taking her on paths that lead to Santiago. The dust in this valley blinds her, but she continues to sing, even though the wind ignites fires within her that she must extinguish.
The wind brings so many melodies, symphonies that captivate her senses, and seem to sing of forbidden love. She carries the road of life in her hand, afraid of losing herself, and her heart also fears not having a beginning. These emotions are all wrapped up in her voice, as she sings for this person and this person alone.
The song displays Mariza's exceptional vocal control, power, and range, creating a sense of intimacy that connects with the listener. The lyrics are full of pathos and passion, and they take us on a journey into the soul of the singer. When listening to this song, we feel like we are eavesdropping on an intimate conversation between two lovers.
