For the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she collaborated with Sting for the duet "A Thousand Years", released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics Unity, where fado is sung in both English and Portuguese.
Mariza is considered by many as a more contemporary follower of Amalia Rodrigues, and has covered a number of her songs.
In 2003 she became the "Winner in the Europe category" of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Vozes Do Mar
Mariza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to Mariza's song Vozes do Mar describe the beauty and mystery of the sea as the sun sets on the water, creating a golden glow that seems almost magical. The imagery used in the song is striking, with the ocean depicted as a powerful force that has seen much throughout history. The singer ponders the origin of a voice that seems to rise up out of the depths of the sea, filled with sorrow and longing.
The voice of the sea speaks of feasts and cavalries, of wandering knights under the moonlight, and of enchanted caravels that sleep in its embrace weeping. The sea has witnessed great epics and desires, but it also has fears, hopes, and majesty. The lyrics suggest that the voice might be that of an ancient Portugal, summoning the spirit of the renowned poet Camões in nostalgia.
Overall, the song Vozes do Mar invokes a feeling of wonder and awe at the power and mystery of the sea, while also conveying a sense of longing for a past that is both magical and distant.
