Empty Room
Marjorie Fair Lyrics

Building fences on the wall
In this state, I shall not remain
I don't want to go, but if I die young
Fill my empty room with the sun
Fill my empty room with the sun
This doesn't matter much anymore
Change my mind or help me to try
I'm afraid and I'm not satisfied
In this state I shall not remain
I don't want to go, but if I die young
Fill my empty room with the sun
Fill my empty room with the sun
This doesn't matter like it did before
This doesn't matter much anymore
This doesn't matter like it did before
This doesn't matter much anymore
Daylight is not the same
When your stabbing at the stars
In your eyes, and bleeding
Is what you see
This doesn't matter like it did before
This doesn't matter much anymore
This doesn't matter like it did before
This doesn't matter much anymore
This doesn't matter much anymore
The lyrics of Marjorie Fair's song "Empty Room" seem to speak to a sense of weariness and resignation with the way things are. The lines "I'm so tired of learning to talk / Building fences on the wall" suggest a sense of frustration with the difficulties of communication and the effort required to maintain boundaries in relationships. Despite this, the singer seems to have a sense of determination to not remain in this state of weariness, and the lines "In this state, I shall not remain / I don't want to go, but if I die young" suggest a desire for change even in the face of uncertainty or risk.
The repeated refrain "Fill my empty room with the sun" can be interpreted in several ways. On one level, it can be seen as a poetic request for light and warmth in a life that feels empty or lacking. On another level, it can be seen as a symbolic request for the singer's life to be filled with positivity and joy after their death.
The final lines of the song, "Daylight is not the same / When your stabbing at the stars / In your eyes, and bleeding / Is what you see," suggest a sense of struggle and pain even in moments of beauty and wonder. Despite this, the overall tone of the song is not one of despair but rather a bittersweet acknowledgement of the impermanence of life and a desire for something better.

I played this song almost everyday the year it came out. I just couldn't get enough of it. I nearly blew out my car speakers when it played on Indie 101. What a great song. Thank you for sharing.

Heard the Waves song on a wakeboarding video back in 08-09' and had to find that music. I love all the songs, so moving and full of heart and passion. Still pulling up from time to time to listen again like today in 2022. Thanks guys for such a great album.
